AABANY’s Annual Meeting of Members (the “Annual Meeting”) will be held on February 13, 2019 at 7:00 pm ET at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, 51 West 52nd Street, New York, NY 10019.
At this meeting, we will conduct our election of AABANY Officers and Directors. Your vote is very important. Whether or not you plan to attend the Annual Meeting, we encourage you to complete the proxy form and return it to us by Feb. 8, 2019.

The New York Day of Remembrance Committee is proud to present the 2nd annual New York City Fred T. Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution, to be celebrated on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at the New York County Lawyers Association, Andrew Hamilton Hall, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. The event is co-sponsored by the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) and the Asian Practice Committee of the New York County Lawyers Association. AABANY members will perform a reenactment of the legal proceedings in Korematsu v. United States.
About the Trial Reenactment:
On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, uprooting some 120,000 Japanese-Americans – two-thirds of them American citizens – from their homes on the West Coast and forcing them into concentration camps. Fred Korematsu refused to go. He was arrested, and convicted of violating the Executive Order and related military proclamations. He appealed his conviction first to the Ninth Circuit and then to the Supreme Court. In 1944, the Supreme Court affirmed his conviction, upholding the Executive Order. In 1983, nearly forty years later, the federal court in San Francisco vacated Korematsu’s conviction after evidence was uncovered showing that the government had suppressed evidence that undermined its assertions before the Supreme Court.

This presentation by members of the Asian American Bar Association of New York, led by the Honorable Denny Chin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Kathy Hirata Chin, Partner, Crowell & Moring, will tell the story of Fred Korematsu and his fight for justice through narration, reenactment of court proceedings, and historic documents and photographs.

Since 2014, AABANY has sought to recognize one law firm each year for its extraordinary efforts to improve the diversity of our profession by presenting AABANY’s Law Firm Diversity Award. The 2018 AABANY Law Firm Diversity Award will be presented at the Annual Dinner on February 27, 2019.
Nominees should be a law firm that has achieved significant success in the areas of recruiting, retaining and promoting women and diverse attorneys while also demonstrating a commitment to raising awareness of, and influencing the legal community to address, the challenges faced by women and diverse attorneys in the legal industry.

In this season of giving, we count among our blessings being part of the great community that is the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY). Our strongest asset is you, our members, and we are writing now to appeal to you for support of AABANY’s Monthly Pro Bono Clinic.
From its beginning, AABANY has sought to serve the community and to advocate for it. In that spirit, AABANY started the Monthly Pro Bono Legal Advice and Referral Clinic. By leveraging expertise and language skills of AABANY’s active and diverse membership, the Clinic effectively expands access to justice and provides the Asian American community a way to receive high-quality legal services that are also culturally sensitive and linguistically competent.
The Clinic can only operate with the generosity of donors and volunteers. During this holiday season, please consider supporting this vital project that is close to our hearts by donating to the Clinic. The Clinic has grown in the last year to the point that we are sometimes seeing nearly 50 clients in a short two-hour span. Your donations will help to pay for much needed administrative support and supplies that currently come out of the limited budget allocated to the Pro Bono and Community Service Committee that is charged with running the Clinic.
AABANY’s 501(c)(3) affiliate, the Asian American Law Fund of New York (AALFNY), is accepting charitable donations and can issue a tax receipt to you for your generous support. Please join us on January 29, 2019, at Alston & Bird LLP, for a presentation and panel discussion on the basics of intellectual property transactions involving distressed companies in the United States. Our panel will provide an overview of U.S. bankruptcy and intellectual property law and explore potential issues, risks, and considerations in connection with licensing and purchasing intellectual property where parties are financially distressed. In addition, the panel will address particular issues that may face Chinese and other foreign companies engaging in such transactions, such as CFIUS (Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States) scrutiny.

| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.
Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.
