On Wednesday, February 27, 2019, AABANY hosted its 30th Anniversary Annual Dinner: United in Action and Vision: Towards 2020 Together at Cipriani Wall Street. The dinner attracted over 700 attorneys, judges, prosecutors, in-house counsel, government officials, and dignitaries and sponsorships from more than 55 law firms and corporations.
This year AABANY was proud to honor:
- Gurbir S. Grewal, Attorney General for the State of New Jersey, with the Public Service Leadership Award
- Deneen Donnley, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of USAA, with the Corporate Leadership Award
- Gabrielle Lyse Brown, Executive Director, Diversity and Inclusion for Morgan Stanley, with the Women’s Leadership Award
- Davis Polk & Wardwell with the 2019 Law Firm Diversity Award.
In addition, we were also pleased to present scholarships to this year’s class of Don Liu Scholars.
We thank all of the AABANY Annual Dinner Planning Committee members and volunteers for their hard work in making this year’s celebration a huge success.

AABANY thanks everyone who submitted nominations for the election taking place at the Annual Meeting scheduled for February 13, 2019. We did not receive any qualified submissions for the position of Secretary and therefore it was marked as vacant for the meeting. The Board will fill this vacancy pursuant to Section 7.05 of the bylaws. If you are interested in applying for the Secretary position, please submit your nomination materials by no later than 5:00 PM on Wednesday, March 6. Note that you may be meeting with the Nominations Committee on March 13, in the evening, so please save the date.

AABANY's Pro Bono Clinic offers members the opportunity to volunteer and provide valuable advice to community members. We are seeking volunteers for our next clinic on March 13th, 2019 between 6:00-8:00 pm.
The clinic will be held at our new location: The community room on the ground floor, 33 Bowery Street, New York, NY 10002 (NOT 3 Bowery Street).

Equality is easy to grasp in theory but often hard to achieve in reality. In this accessible and wide-ranging work, American University law professor Robert L. On March 15, please join us for a Conversation on Asian Pacific American Engagement in Public Service with Josh Hsu, Deputy Chief of Staff, U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) and Suzanne Kim, Professor of Law, Rutgers University Law School.
In February, Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) named Josh Hsu as her deputy chief of staff. Hsu previously served as Senator Harris's general counsel from 2017 to 2019. Prior to that, Hsu worked for Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), where he was chief counsel for nominations during Leahy’s tenure as Chair and Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Before working in the Senate, he worked as an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union and as a clerk for then-federal district judge Denny Chin in the Southern District of New York. Hsu is a graduate of Georgetown Law and Georgetown University.

Apply for the seventh annual Collaborative Bar Leadership Academy (CBLA) in Denver, Colorado from June 23 to 25, 2019. The CBLA is a collaborative effort among the American Bar Association, Hispanic National Bar Association, National Bar Association, National Native American Bar Association, and NAPABA. The CBLA will strengthen the pipeline of diverse bar association leaders through leadership training and professional development programs.
The CBLA is intended for up-and-coming bar leaders who have been in practice for 5-15 years and have served as officers of a NAPABA affiliate and/or chair/co-chair of a NAPABA committee.

| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.
Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.
