On Tuesday, April 30, 2019, please join AABANY and the Asia Society for a discussion about the current and future state of affirmative action.
As the main focus of the lawsuit brought against Harvard, Asian Americans and affirmative action have once again become a point of contention in contemporary political debate, and within the Asian American community itself. A grassroots Asian American conservative movement has emerged in an attempt to end affirmative action, asserting that discrimination in the name of diversity is wrong. Asian American liberals believe that conservative Asian Americans are being used as cover to abolish affirmative action, and fear a defeat of affirmative action means a loss for diversity in all of higher education.
Chris Kwok, AABANY Director and Chair of the Issues Committee, will be moderating a panel of speakers from all sides of the issue. Special discount code available for AABANY members.

Asian Americans are a growing presence in all sectors of the legal profession. They work in BigLaw and in smaller firms and solo practice, and as government attorneys, corporate counsel, prosecutors, public defenders, judges, and more. But they fall short in attaining leadership positions and have the highest attrition rates from major law firms. Research has not substantially studied the myriad ways in which Asian American lawyers and law students struggle and thrive, and the unique incentives and constraints that shape their career paths.
The first stage of the 2017 Portrait Project study, supported by Yale Law School and the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), published a widely-circulated report that revealed that while Asian Americans have entered every facet of the legal profession, they are underrepresented in top leadership positions across all sectors.
The second phase of this research project moves beyond asking the “what” questions to probing “why” these trends occur and “how” we can address them.
AABANY will match up to $5,000 in donations from its members for the Portrait Project Fund. All donations will be given to the American Bar Foundation (ABF), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, and every donor will receive a charitable contribution letter from ABF reflecting their individual donation. The challenge will officially end on September 21, 2019 at the Annual Fall Conference.

| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.
