Open Meeting for Candidates Seeking to Run in AABANY 2014 Election, Nov. 19 |
On November 19, we will hold an open meeting at which prospective candidates can make their submissions in person. If you have already sent in your materials by November 15, by regular mail, e-mail or fax, you need not attend the open meeting. At this open meeting, the Chair of the Nominations Committee will be in attendance, and members of the Nominations Committee and the Board may also be present, to give prospective candidates an opportunity to meet Nominations Committee members and Board members. Attendance would only be mandatory for those prospective candidates who did not make their submissions by the November 15 deadline. November 19 is the FINAL deadline for submission of candidates' materials. No submissions will be accepted after this date. If you have any questions about any of the above, please contact Mike Huang, Chair of the Nominations Committee, at mike.huang@aabany.org. Final deadline for submissions is November 19. | Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) was in town for the Women’s Senate Network 2013 Policy Conference and while she was here, she took a moment out of her busy schedule on Monday morning, November 18, to meet with some of AABANY’s leaders. Women’s Committee Co-Chairs Naf Kwun and Sapna Palla, Immigration and Nationality Law Committee Co-Chair Tsui Yee and Executive Director Yang Chen sat down for breakfast with the Senator. In a free flowing and wide-ranging conversation, Senator Hirono shared with AABANY’s leaders her thoughts about increasing civic engagement and participation by APAs in politics and the political process, immigration reform and increasing diversity on the bench. Senator Hirono introduced the AABANY group to EMILY’s List as a resource to help train future political candidates to run for office. |
Senator Hirono urges AABANY members to step up and get involved in politics as a way to make an impact in our communities. We look forward to remaining in contact with Senator Hirono and finding ways to work together with her to advance and serve our APA communities. |
NACDL Strike Force Represents Vinoo Varghese |
The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) now represents Vinoo Varghese pro bono in supporting his opposition to the Manhattan DA’s attempt to subpoena him to testify against his client’s interests. The NACDL has a "Lawyers Assistance Strike Force [which] has a clear mission of representing and counseling criminal defense lawyers who are members of NACDL when they are imperiled with the risks of contempt, disqualification or subpoena for privileged information.” Read more at bit.ly/nacdl_vv |

The United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit has announced an application process for a bankruptcy judgeship in the District of New Jersey, seated in Camden. AALDEF: Asian American Voters Not Tied to Political Party in Key States |
November 14, 2013 – According to the results of an exit poll in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York, Asian American voters are open to candidates of both political parties in key states. The nonpartisan multilingual exit poll of 2,290 Asian American voters was conducted by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) after the mayoral election in New York and the gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia.
