On May 25, in commemoration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, please join us for an in-person trial reenactment and discussion co-sponsored by the Asian Affinity Network at Allen & Overy LLP, the Asian American Bar Association of New York and Don H. Liu Scholars Program, Inc. Remote joining option is available. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, thousands of Vietnamese refugees resettled in the Texas Gulf Coast, working as fishermen. This drew competition and animosity from the local shrimpers. In an effort to curb the competition, the Klu Klux Klan was called in to terrorize and intimidate the Vietnamese fishermen, as well as those who were willing to help the Vietnamese fishermen. With the help of the Southern Poverty Law Center as their legal counsel, the Vietnamese Fishermen’s Association filed a class action alleging amongst others, violations of several civil rights statutes and the Sherman Act. The lawsuit of the Vietnamese fishermen in 1981 against the Klan was highly publicized and resulted in a permanent injunction prohibiting the Klan from continuing its campaign of intimidation and violence against the Vietnamese fishermen. After the trial reenactment, join A&O partner John Hwang and senior counsel Tracy Feng for a discussion with guest speakers Dr. Ivan Small, Jo-Ann Yoo and Khanh Nguyen on the experiences of and challenges to the Asian American community in the past and the present. Please RSVP by Friday, May 20 using the link below. Calendar invites will be available upon doing so. REGISTRATION LINK
