NAPABA Webinar on Combating a History of Anti-Asian Discrimination: How to Protect the Asian American Community

On Friday, April 3rd, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) hosted a webinar titled “Pandemic and Acts of Hate Against Asian Americans: From Past to Present.” The webinar traced the historical roots of Asian American discrimination related to disease and public health issues and presented solutions for the present in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The webinar featured a panel which included Professor Jack Chin of UC Davis Law School, Matt Stevens of The New York Times’s Political News division, Harpreet Singh Mokha of the Department of Justice’s Community Relations Service, and Rahat N. Babar, Special Counsel, Office of the Governor of New Jersey. Chris M. Kwok, the NAPABA Dispute Resolution Committee Co-Chair and our very own AABANY Issues Committee Chair, helmed the panel as moderator. The panel outlined past and present cases of racial discrimination targeted towards the AAPI community.

Complete the Census 2020 Today!

The United States Constitution requires that the nation’s population be accurately counted every ten years via the census. The data collected from the census ensures equal access to important governmental and private resources for all Americans. This includes how federal funding is allocated to states and localities.

Census results also impact the number of seats each state has in congress and your political representation at all levels of government. The data collected by the census affects how district lines are drawn for the U.S. House of Representatives, state legislatures, and local boards.

Asian Americans are one of the fastest growing groups in the United States. For Asian American communities to be properly represented in government decision making and to receive a proper allocation of funding, we must complete the census.

You can complete the census online by clicking on the link below. It is easy and only takes about 10 minutes to complete. Your submission will help direct billions of dollars in federal aid to local communities for various public services.

Renew Your Membership Now and Get 20% Off Plus Free Membership in NAPABA

AABANY values its members.  We are offering a promotion for those of you whose membership has lapsed. We would hate to lose your membership and are writing with a special offer in hopes you will renew now. This promotion has been extended by Membership Director Beatrice Leong to May 31, 2020.

AABANY members are part of a vibrant community of attorneys in the private and public sector, along with judges, academics, law students and legal professionals in New York. We are the largest minority bar association in New York and one of the most active, with numerous CLE programs throughout the year at which you can develop professionally and expand your professional networks. We connect socially at fun events, like sports and cultural outings, such as Mets and Yankees games this past summer and most recently a night at the opera at the Met.

As previously notified, members of AABANY are eligible for complimentary membership in the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA).

To get the 20% discount code, contact us at membership@aabany.org and we will send you instructions. Once you have renewed, we will follow up with the special code you need to activate your free NAPABA Membership.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact membership@aabany.org. We hope to see you soon at a future AABANY event.

Join the AABANY Community Response Task Force

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.

The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.

PLEASE NOTE that the  Community Response Task Force form has been updated.  Even if you have already filled out the form,  we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
