Letter to Our Members from AABANY President Sapna Palla

On April 16, 2020, President Sapna Palla sent a letter to AABANY members addressing the unprecedented situation created by the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, and the efforts AABANY has been engaged in to support and advocate for our community during this challenging time.

Those efforts include the following:

  • We compiled and published on our website listings of COVID-19 resources on numerous topics that are vital and critical to Asian Americans, including immigration, housing, small business financial assistance programs, and how to combat anti-Asian harassment and violence.
  • We joined with national organizations to condemn COVID-19 related anti-Asian violence and xenophobia.
  • We supported Asian students in their effort to challenge unreasonable forced eviction from International House.
  • We stayed engaged and informed through various meetings convened by government offices and elected officials on COVID-19 related anti-Asian racism and attacks.
  • We are helping to educate the public on combating anti-Asian violence by participating in webinars on the subject.
  • We are partnering with prominent law firms on projects to advocate for and support members of the Asian American community who may be adversely affected by COVID-19.

AABANY will zealously continue working to support Asian Americans impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. We encourage you to do the same by getting involved through AABANY, your firms or any other groups you are affiliated with to continue fighting anti-Asian violence or to help members in the community.

Virtual Town Hall: Combating Hate Crimes Together

On April 20, 2020 at 6:00 PM EDT Alvin Bragg, former Chief Deputy at the New York State Attorney General’s Office, will be hosting a virtual town hall on “Combating Hate Crimes Together.”

Today's webinar will focus on how hate crimes not only impact the person targeted, but can also impact other members of their race, nationality, religion, or LGBTQ community. In addition, other topics to be addressed will include the issue of underreporting of hate crimes by victims because of their mistrust in government and the challenges people face in bringing hate crime related civil actions.  AABANY Board Director and Issues Committee Chair Chris Kwok is a panelist.

Join today's Zoom webinar at https://us04web.zoom.us/j/73121423202

Complete the Census 2020 Today!

The United States Constitution requires that the nation’s population be accurately counted every ten years via the census. The data collected from the census ensures equal access to important governmental and private resources for all Americans. This includes how federal funding is allocated to states and localities.

Census results also impact the number of seats each state has in congress and your political representation at all levels of government. The data collected by the census affects how district lines are drawn for the U.S. House of Representatives, state legislatures, and local boards.

Asian Americans are one of the fastest growing groups in the United States. For Asian American communities to be properly represented in government decision making and to receive a proper allocation of funding, we must complete the census.

You can complete the census online by clicking on the link below. It is easy and only takes about 10 minutes to complete. Your submission will help direct billions of dollars in federal aid to local communities for various public services.

Join the AABANY Community Response Task Force

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.

The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.

PLEASE NOTE that the  Community Response Task Force form has been updated.  Even if you have already filled out the form,  we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
