On May 20, 2021, City & State published an Op-Ed written by President Terry Shen and Past President Linda Lin of the Asian American Bar Association of New York. In the Op-Ed, President Shen and Past President Lin describe how a wave of Anti-Asian violence swept across New York City in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and how the city government’s lackluster response to these incidents has not been enough to protect the AAPI community. According to the article, stronger Asian-American representation in New York’s courts can help to solve these issues. Read more here. |

Please join AABANY SOC and the Asian Affinity Network at Allen & Overy LLP for a virtual trial reenactment and discussion, in commemoration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
After the trial reenactment (4PM–5PM), join A&O partner John Hwang as he sits down in conversation
with Congresswoman Grace Meng on the anti-Asian hate crimes bill, the Covid-19 Hate Crimes Act, in
the context of the issues that the Asian community continues to face with respect to anti-Asian racism, sexualization, stereotyping and profiling. Come out and cheer on your follow AABANY students, meet the Allen & Overy family,
and learn about this important historical case!
Case background: In 1874, Chy Lung along with 21 other Chinese women were detained upon arrival in California and ordered deported because they were considered undesirable aliens and “lewd and debauched women.” At that time, anti-Chinese sentiment was common and fervent in California. The statute that the state of California invoked to do so was one of several measures taken by the state to restrict Chinese immigration into the state. The 22 women lost their case in the California Supreme Court, so they brought it to Federal courts and all the way to the Supreme Court, making this the first case to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court with a Chinese litigant. This case is one of the few recorded examples in the United States of discrimination against Asians, as well as a refusal of the Asian community to comply with racist policy. In furtherance of our commitment to civic education and community engagement, we will be hosting a live virtual trial reenactment of the case of these 22 “lewd” women.
Trial reenactment: 4:00 - 5:00 PM EST Conversation with Special Guest, Congresswoman Grace Meng: 5:00 - 5:45 PM EST
CLE credits: Each attendee will receive 2.0 credits in Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias
The Asian American Bar Association of New York is certified by the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board as an Accredited Provider. This program has been approved in accordance with the requirements of the CLE Board for a maximum of 2 credit hours, in which 2 credit hours will be applied toward the Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias requirement. Only non-transitional New York attorneys receive Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias credit.

Glenn Magpantay, civil rights attorney, professor, and nonprofit executive, on self-acceptance, confidence, and hope.
As a civil rights activist, a professor of law, and the former Executive Director of the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance, Glenn is a force of nature. In this episode, he opens up about his mental health journey, which included overcoming thoughts of suicide as a result of the harassment, bullying and death threats he faced as one of the only gay and Asian men in his Queens community. Glenn also shares his take on what he believes is driving the spike in anti-Asian hate crimes and what he is doing to make sure this is a lasting movement, not a mere moment, for change. This is a must-listen for anyone who needs a reminder that self-acceptance is a never-ending journey (it is a struggle for everyone at times!), that it is never too late to go after what you want (our biggest obstacle is our own fear), and that none of us get it right all the time (and that is totally OK). Click here to listen to the full episode on The Whole Lawyer Project.

Last fall, AABANY launched a legal referral and information service (“LRIS”) as a public service primarily to help the general public, and especially the Asian American community. The goals of the LRIS are to provide information and referrals,
to recommend lawyers or other resources to provide competent, ethical legal advice and representation, to educate the public about legal representation and to increase respect for the legal profession.
We are seeking qualified
and experienced lawyers to serve on the panels of lawyers eligible to receive referrals from AABANY’s LRIS.
This is a vital program for AABANY that we anticipate will greatly benefit our panelists and fellow members as
well as the public, and especially the Asian American community. If you would like to apply to be considered for the LRIS panel, please contact joinlris@aabany.org and we will send you an application
form. If you have any questions, please send them to the same address.
We hope you can join us in the launch of this important new AABANY initiative.

| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and
coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times,
we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize
a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.
PLEASE NOTE that the Community Response Task Force form has been updated. Even if you have already filled out the form, we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
