NEW YORK – January 25, 2022 —The Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) commends the successful campaigns of three Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI)
judges who were elected to the New York City bench and assumed office on January 1, 2022: Judge Andrea Ogle to the Queens County Civil Court, Judge Christopher Chin to the New York County Civil Court, and Judge Soma Syed to the Queens
County Civil Court. AABANY also applauds the appointments of two AAPI judges to the New York Judiciary: Judge Omer Shahid to the New York City Housing Court and Judge Simiyon Haniff to the New York City Civil Court, both of whom

The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) Annual Meeting of Members (the “Annual Meeting”) will be held on February 8, 2022 at 7:00 pm ET on Remo.
At the Annual Meeting, there are two proposals scheduled to be voted on:
- Proposal 1 – To elect the officers identified on the online ballot to serve a one-year term for the fiscal year beginning April 1, 2022 and ending March 31, 2023 (the “2023 Fiscal Year”);
and
- Proposal 2 – To elect 6 directors from the 6 nominees identified on the online ballot to serve two-year terms beginning on the first day of the 2023 Fiscal Year.
Every Active Member in good standing (as defined in AABANY’s by-laws) as of the Record Date of January 13, 2022 shall be entitled to vote at the Annual Meeting.
Your vote is very important. We need a quorum of 75 to conduct the Election at the Annual Meeting, and your proxy ballot will help us attain the necessary quorum.Whether or not you plan to attend the Annual Meeting, we encourage you to complete the online ballot
by Feb. 3. If you would prefer to receive the proxy ballot in hard copy, please contact main@aabany.org.

Don’t miss this powerhouse panel as they reflect on their experiences and share their career journeys.
Hon. Ona T. Wang, is the first Asian-American Magistrate Judge in the SDNY.
Hon. Diane Gujarati (EDNY), an AABANY member, is the first Indian-American to serve as an Article III judge in New York.
Hon. Sanket Bulsara (EDNY), an AABANY member, is the first Indian-American judge within the Second Circuit.
The series will be moderated by Padmaja Chinta, Esq., partner at Chinta & Fratangelo LLP, and the SDNY Chapter’s Chief Diversity Officer.

AABANY is starting a project that records the stories and memories of the AABANY Founders and Early Members. This oral history project has several goals: - help connect AABANY members across generations,
- generate research about the history and experience of Asian American lawyers,
- help younger lawyers and law students develop interviewing skills, and
- generate some great content that can be shared on social media during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
The project aims to post one story per day during APA Heritage Month on our social media and have videos, presented in "Humans of New York" style of storytelling. Former journalist and current attorney Stephen Lee, of Chicago has volunteered to teach those interested "how to conduct a journalistic interview." Please register by Feb. 15. Secretary and Membership Committee Co-Chair Christopher Bae has kindly decided to mark his birthday by raising funds for the Turning the Tide (T3) Project, created by AALFNY and AABANY to support the work of our Anti-Asian Violence Task Force. In Fall 2020, AABANY launched a legal referral and information service (“LRIS”) as a public service primarily to help the general public, and especially the Asian American community. The goals of the LRIS are to provide information and referrals,
to recommend lawyers or other resources to provide competent, ethical legal advice and representation, to educate the public about legal representation and to increase respect for the legal profession.
We are seeking qualified
and experienced lawyers to serve on the panels of lawyers eligible to receive referrals from AABANY’s LRIS.
This is a vital program for AABANY that we anticipate will greatly benefit our panelists and fellow members as
well as the public, and especially the Asian American community. If you would like to apply to be considered for the LRIS panel, please contact joinlris@aabany.org and we will send you an application

| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and
coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times,
we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize
a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.
PLEASE NOTE that the Community Response Task Force form has been updated. Even if you have already filled out the form, we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
