To commemorate her profound contributions to the judicial system and the Asian American community, AABANY, along with a number of Asian American community groups, have announced that they will hold a memorial service for Hon. Dorothy Chin-Brandt (Chen Cuifang) on May 24th, 2025.
“Should I go abroad to study?” “Should I consider returning to China?” These may be the questions lingering in the minds of many Chinese and American legal professionals in recent years.
Faced with visa uncertainties, career “ceilings,” and the tensions in U.S.-China political relations, an increasing number of legal professionals in the U.S. are asking themselves: “Should I stay or go back?”
On the flip side, with the downturn in China’s legal services market, salary cuts, layoffs, and the closure of foreign law firm offices, more legal professionals are considering studying in the U.S. as a way to change their environment—or even their career path.
Staying in the U.S. may mean greater professional recognition, a more liberal lifestyle, but also the pressures of visa status, cultural adaptation, and career advancement. Returning to China may offer a more familiar cultural context and a stable living environment, but it could also mean facing a more fiercely competitive legal market.
AABANY is delighted to co-host an online salon with Chinese American Lawyers Forum (CALF), CLECSS, and Inside the Lawyers Podcast. We have invited legal professionals with diverse backgrounds and rich bilateral U.S.-China career experiences to discuss “To Be or Not to Be: Career Path in U.S. or China?” They will share their insights and experiences, hoping to provide some guidance for those grappling with the same questions.
Discussion Topics:
U.S. Perspective: current status of law students in the U.S, visa solutions and career prospects, job search strategies, quality of life in America, and navigating relationships & social life.
China Perspective: current state of the legal job market, business development and client acquisition, market trends and challenges, readapting to life in China, and rebuilding professional networks.
Fee:
Free admission—all are welcome to join the discussion!

On April 20, 2024, as part of the New York State Budget, New York State adopted the Heirs Property and Deed Theft Prevention Act of 2024. Among the many aspects of law was the creation of the Transfer on Death Deed (TODD) as defined in New York Real Property Law (RPL) Section 424. New York State has joined other states in recognizing the use of TODD, which in NY is limited to the distribution of real property upon death.
This program will help you understand the purpose and ramifications of the new law, whose focus is to permit options to lengthy probate and judicial and trust administration proceedings, as well as the form itself and availability of revocation. Margaret Ling, Co-Chair of the Real Estate Committee, will be one of the speakers.
After the program, in-person attendees are invited to a networking reception. This will be a hybrid event—you can attend online or in-person.
Alysha Naik, AABANY Membership Director and Partner at Rupp Pfalzgraf LLC, is looking for an associate who is more than just “a good lawyer.” They are searching for someone who dives headfirst into complex cases and has sharp insights,
an innate curiosity, and a relentless drive to tackle tough questions and uncover creative solutions.
The ideal associate thrives on getting into the nitty-gritty details, coming up with practical solutions, and taking on
hands-on legal work like depositions, court conferences, and direct communications with counsel, government agencies, and clients.
AABANY, in partnership with the Asian American Law Fund of New York (AALFNY), is pleased to announce the Turning the Tide (T3) Project. Following the February 10, 2021 publication of AABANY and Paul, Weiss’ report, A Rising Tide of Hate and Violence against Asian Americans in New York During COVID-19: Impact, Causes, Solutions, AABANY established an Anti-Asian Violence Task Force to advance the proposals outlined in the report and consider other solutions to address the surge of anti-Asian hate and violence in the community. The Task Force advances the T3
project, which aims to incorporate a three-pronged approach encompassing education and communication, advocacy, and research, to address anti-Asian hate and violence.
Please stand together with AABANY and AALFNY in turning
the tide against anti-Asian hate and violence. We are now accepting donations to support the T3 Project. Donations can be made to AALFNY and will be tax deductible to the extent permitted by applicable law.
For more details
about the T3 Project, please click here.
In Fall 2020, AABANY launched a legal referral and information service (“LRIS”) as a public service primarily to help the general public, and especially the Asian American community. The goals of the LRIS are to provide information and referrals,
to recommend lawyers or other resources to provide competent, ethical legal advice and representation, to educate the public about legal representation and to increase respect for the legal profession.
We are seeking qualified
and experienced lawyers to serve on the panels of lawyers eligible to receive referrals from AABANY’s LRIS.
This is a vital program for AABANY that we anticipate will greatly benefit our panelists and fellow members as well
as the public, and especially the Asian American community. If you would like to apply to be considered for the LRIS panel, please contact joinlris@aabany.org, and we will send you an application
form. If you have any questions, please send them to the same address.
AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective,
and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging
times, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute,
or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent
to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.
PLEASE
NOTE that the Community Response Task Force form has been updated. Even if you have already filled out the form, we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
