Applications Now Open for the 2019-2020 AABANY Leadership Development Program

AABANY’s Leadership Development Program (ALDP) is a 6-month long interactive leadership training course that is focused on cultivating AABANY members who are senior attorneys through the promotion process within law firms, companies and the government.  In 2018, we successfully launched our law firm partnership track program focused on guiding a selected group of APA law firm associates on the partnership track (please click here to learn more about ALDP).   This year, we are expanding ALDP to include an in-house counsel track program to guide a small group of qualified senior APA in-house counsel into senior management positions within their organizations (e.g., SVP, Deputy GC or GC).

Applications are now open and must be submitted no later than 11:59pm on Monday, July 15, 2019.  For more details, click here.

Congratulations to Kathy Hirata Chin, Joon Kim and Carol Lee

AABANY congratulates the following members and friends of our association who were honored in May:

AABANY Off-Broadway Outing: "You never touched the dirt," June 5

For those that joined AABANY last year in our outing to see the off broadway play "The Deal," Zhu Yi is back with "You never touched the dirt," directed by Ken Rus Schmoll. A play about economic transformation—the dreams it enables and those it crushes—the new work tells the story of the Lis, a family trying to enjoy their lakeside vacation but who find themselves surrounded by the gardeners, maids, and security guards who had once owned the land (not to mention the gods, ghosts, and unnamed spirits there for thousands of years before them).

This event is co-sponsored by our Membership Committee and Asia Practice Committee.

For more information and to buy tickets at $25 per person, click here.

Join AABANY to Support Portrait Project 2.0

A recent Law360 article entitled “Why Are Law Clerks So White” reported:

Take any five federal law clerks, and at least four of them would probably be white. And nobody can be certain why.

California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu has some guesses about the reasons black, Asian and Latino lawyers are largely shut out of these prestigious positions that can turbocharge a lawyer’s early career. But he says it’s impossible to pinpoint reasons or patterns because so little data exists.

“We actually don’t even know the most basic things about those opportunities,” Justice Liu told Law360. “It would be interesting if we could know even basic things, like do women judges get more women clerks? We have impressions of that, but we don’t know with any precision whether these things are true.”

The article went on to talk about how Justice Liu plans to address these questions in Portrait Project 2.0. AABANY is supporting this research as a Silver Sponsor. AABANY challenges its members to donate to Portrait Project 2.0. AABANY will match member donations up to $5,000. Join AABANY in advancing the work of Portrait Project 2.0. Join the AABANY Community Response Task Force

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.

The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.
