They will also learn directly from various trial veterans through morning and afternoon sessions. Course materials will be provided in advance.

This is a standalone program. Registrants who choose to participate in TAP must attend TAP ONLY.

2019 NAPABA Northeast Regional/AABANY Fall Conference: Pitch Sessions

Registration has now opened for the 2019 NAPABA Northeast Regional/AABANY Fall Conference: Pitch Sessions.

During the 2019 NE Regional/Fall Conference, conference registrants, in-house counsel and Elite and Gold level sponsors will have an opportunity to participate in Pitch Sessions. The Pitch Sessions provide a platform for law firm attorneys/solo practitioners and legal service vendors to make meaningful connections with in-house counsels and other participants interested in legal services.

In-house counsel that wish to hear pitches, and law firm attorneys or legal service vendors that wish to give pitches should go to https://conference2019.aabany.org/pitch-sessions/ for more information and to sign up.

Deadline to complete Law Firm applications to give pitches is September 9, 2019.

2019 NAPABA Northeast Regional/AABANY Fall Conference: Professional Development Coaching: Registration Extended

AABANY is continuing its Professional Development Coaching program at this year's NE Regional/Fall Conference, and our focus this year will be on Developing the Ability to Influence Others. PDC Sessions are a safe space where participants can seek and receive honest feedback on “blind spots” that may be inhibiting their career advancement. This skill is an important one to cultivate at any stage of one’s career, whether you are a junior attorney seeking to be staffed on a certain matter, a seasoned attorney with your eye on partnership or the c-suite, or in transition planning your next career move. To this end, participants should be prepared to discuss (1) whom they want to influence, (2) under what scenario(s) do they want to influence this person, and (3) how they plan to influence this person. Please note that this is a one-time session and there is no expectation of an ongoing coaching or mentoring relationship.

For more details and to sign up, please see https://conference2019.aabany.org/professional-development-coaching/

REGISTRATION HAS BEEN EXTENDED THROUGH September 10.

Highlight: Law Student Mixer at District Social

AABANY’s Student Outreach Committee was pleased to host the Annual Law Student Mixer at District Social in midtown Manhattan on Thursday, September 6, 2019. Local APALSA leaders, law students, and AABANY members gathered to mingle and foster new connections. Following in the footsteps of last year’s Law Student Mixer, the entire private cellar of the venue was specifically reserved for this event. Despite the weather, there were 60 attendees present, filling out the venue space. Attendees were treated to an assortment of delicious gastropub foods including flatbreads, sliders, and parmesan fries.

The event was co-sponsored by AABANY’s Asia Practice, Membership, Student Outreach and Young Lawyers Committees. The committees were successful in introducing law students to AABANY at what was the first AABANY event for many of them.

Thank you to the co-chairs of the four committees for co-hosting this successful event. If you are not already a member, we hope your attendance brings you closer to becoming a member or renewing your membership, and thank you to all of the members who came out. We encourage everyone to attend the next AABANY mixer on October 30.

Applications are now being Accepted for the 2019-2020 Don H. Liu Scholars Program

AABANY is proud to announce that applications for the Don H. Liu Scholars Program are now open. The Program was founded in 2014 by two past presidents of AABANY. Each scholar will be awarded $15,000 each and have access to prominent mentors, including Don H. Liu, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal and Risk Officer of Target Corporation. The Program will also provide assistance in career development, including identifying potential internships.

Details and more information about the Program can be found at http://www.donhliuscholars.org.

Join AABANY to Support Portrait Project 2.0

A recent Law360 article entitled “Why Are Law Clerks So White” reported:

Take any five federal law clerks, and at least four of them would probably be white. And nobody can be certain why.

California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu has some guesses about the reasons black, Asian and Latino lawyers are largely shut out of these prestigious positions that can turbocharge a lawyer’s early career. But he says it’s impossible to pinpoint reasons or patterns because so little data exists.

“We actually don’t even know the most basic things about those opportunities,” Justice Liu told Law360. “It would be interesting if we could know even basic things, like do women judges get more women clerks? We have impressions of that, but we don’t know with any precision whether these things are true.”

The article went on to talk about how Justice Liu plans to address these questions in Portrait Project 2.0. AABANY is supporting this research as a Silver Sponsor. AABANY challenges its members to donate to Portrait Project 2.0. AABANY will match member donations up to $5,000. Join AABANY in advancing the work of Portrait Project 2.0. Join the AABANY Community Response Task Force

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.

The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.
