To read the full announcements go here: https://blog.aabany.org/2019/09/30/napaba-announces-2019-award-winners/. AABANY is excited and honored to be named Affiliate of the Year. We last received this honor in 2008, and we are proud to be recognized with this award this year. We thank NAPABA for the recognition, and we thank all our members, leaders, sponsors, friends and supporters that have made this award possible. We plan to celebrate the 30th anniversary of AABANY’s founding at the NAPABA National Convetion in Austin, Texas, in November. We also announced at the Northeast Regional/Fall Conference that AABANY will be receiving the Affiliate of the Year Award at the convention. We now have another great reason to celebrate, so we hope all AABANY members are making plans to join us in Austin in November. To facilitate communicating with each other in Austin, Membership Director Beatrice Leong has started a WhatsApp group, and to join it, we ask that you email us your name and phone number, so that we can get you added to the WhatsApp group. Send the email to main@aabany.org and we will pass along the information to Beatrice. Hope to you can come celebrate with us in Austin!

AABANY’s Pro Bono Committee organized and held its first ever Brooklyn Pro Bono Clinic was held on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at A Plus Academy located at 6802 8th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY and it was quite the successful event. With a total of 30 volunteers in attendance, including attorneys, interpreters and a benefits counselor, we were able to provide legal assistance and referrals to 27 clients from the New York community.
The Brooklyn Pro Bono Clinic has allowed AABANY’s Pro Bono Committee to service a new community in need of pro bono legal services and indicates our efforts to grow and expand these services to more New Yorkers in need. Clients local to Brooklyn were able to attend, but clients traveling from Queens and other surrounding areas also made the trip in, with some clients stating that they traveled an hour or more just to receive the help they have been looking for.
We thank our volunteers for making our first Pro Bono Clinic in Brooklyn a very successful one.

During the cocktail reception at the Northeast Regional/Fall Conference, we announced that the Pro Bono Clinic has set a fundraising goal of $25,000 to support its growing operations. To make it easier for our members and our community to donate to the Pro Bono Clinic, we have set up a page on Give Lively where you can make a donation by texting APAPROBONO to 44321. It takes seconds to donate, and we hope you will take a moment today to support the Pro Bono Clinic and help it meet its fundraising goal. Through the generosity of those who gave at the cocktail reception at the Fall Conference, we already have collected more than $1300. Just $23,700 more to go! Please donate today.

AABANY is proud to announce that applications for the Don H. Liu Scholars Program are now open. The Program was founded in 2014 by two past presidents of AABANY. The Program seeks to identify and cultivate future Asian American leaders in the legal community to address the single most important reality facing Asian American professionals today: the barrier to advancement. This year, the Selection Committee will select up to three scholars. Each scholar will be awarded $15,000 each and have access to prominent mentors, including Don H. Liu, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal and Risk Officer of Target Corporation. The Program will also provide assistance in career development, including identifying potential internships.
Details and more information about the Program can be found at http://www.donhliuscholars.org.
For more details on the application process and eligibility requirements, please find the application package here: http://www.donhliuscholars.org/application/. To read AABANY's full press release, click here.
Application materials are due by 11:59pm (Eastern Standard Time), November 1, 2019.

| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.
