Law Student Group Rate Available until December 6, 2019

AABANY’s Student Outreach Committee is excited to launch a group membership rate for law students at local Asian Pacific American Law Student Associations (APALSAs). For a group rate of $150, AABANY will offer up to 20 APALSA members free one-year memberships. This group rate covers all AABANY events, including  CLE and non-CLE programs, networking events, AABANY’s Mentorship Program and AABANY’s Annual Fall Conference.

Please note that the current group rate covers up to 20 law students per law school. If the APALSA will have more than 20 participants, please email main@aabany.org to discuss pricing options for groups larger than 20.

This group rate represents a huge discount given that the regular rate for law students is $15 per person. For APALSA members who are already dues-paying members, participation in this group rate will extend current memberships by another year. If you are a member of an APALSA at a New York area law school and interested in participating, please have one representative from your APALSA reach out to main@aabany.org for further instructions.

This law student group rate offer will remain in effect until Friday, December 6, 2019.

Monthly Pro Bono Clinic, Nov. 13

Through its Pro Bono & Community Service Committee, AABANY conducts a monthly free legal advice and referral clinic in the Community Room at 33 Bowery Street (Confucius Plaza) from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM. Those needing legal assistance should bring all documents pertaining to their legal issues to the clinic location, no earlier than 6:00 PM on the given day.

Since the inauguration of this monthly pro bono clinic in 2015, hundreds of low-income community members have received thoughtful advice and appropriate legal referral from AABANY members.

Attorney volunteers do not need to be specialists or have expertise in a specific area of law. Attorney volunteers will only be rendering legal advice and will not take on any legal representation. All volunteers must be AABANY members for professional liability coverage purposes. Volunteers may sign up here to become an AABANY member or can do so at the Pro Bono Clinic.

Volunteers - attorneys and interpreters - should bring open ears, patience, and compassion. All volunteers should arrive by 6:15 PM and will be given an orientation before the start of the clinic. If you have any questions, please email the Volunteer Coordinator, Asako at Asako.Aiba@aabany.org.

Text to Donate in Support of the Pro Bono Clinic

During the cocktail reception at the Northeast Regional/Fall Conference, we announced that the Pro Bono Clinic has set a fundraising goal of $25,000 to support its growing operations. To make it easier for our members and our community to donate to the Pro Bono Clinic, we have set up a page on Give Lively where you can make a donation by texting APAPROBONO  to 44321. It takes seconds to donate, and we hope you will take a moment today to support the Pro Bono Clinic and help it meet its fundraising goal. Through the generosity of those who gave at the cocktail reception at the Fall Conference, we already have collected more than $1300. Just $23,700 more to go! Please donate today.

Join the AABANY Community Response Task Force

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.

The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.
