The Asian American Bar Association of New
York (“AABANY”) Annual Meeting
of Members (the “Annual
Meeting”) will be held on February 11, 2020 at 7:00 pm ET at Allen
& Overy LLP, 1221 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10020.
At the Annual Meeting, there are three
proposals scheduled to be voted on:
Proposal 1 – To elect the officers identified
on the attached proxy to serve a one-year term for the fiscal year beginning
April 1, 2020 and ending March 31, 2021 (the “2020 Fiscal Year”);
Proposal 2 – To elect 6 directors from the 6
nominees identified on the attached proxy to serve two-year terms beginning on
the first day of the 2020 Fiscal Year; and
Proposal 3 –To amend AABANY’s by-laws to
clarify the term limits for Board Members by setting a four (4) year term limit
for Officers and a seven (7) year term limit for Board Members overall and to
correct a clerical error by including “Immediate Past President” amongst the Number
of Officers.

Every Active Member
(as defined in AABANY’s by-laws) in good standing (as defined in AABANY’s
by-laws) shall be entitled to vote at the Annual Meeting.

The Asian American Law Fund of New York (AALFNY) invites law students to apply for our Community Service Scholarship Awards. AALFNY will award Scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each to up to three law students with a demonstrated commitment to the Asian American community. The purpose of the award is to assist law students with their tuition while encouraging them to use their legal knowledge and training to benefit the Asian American community in New York and to foster commitment by law students to public service to the Asian American community in New York.
Applicants should include a description of their proposed summer community service project and the name, email address and phone number of a supervisor at the community service organization or other organization that the Scholarship Committee may contact. Confirmation of the public service project is not required at the time of the application, but will be required before the award of the scholarship. Applicants are responsible for arranging their own projects.

Through its Pro Bono & Community Service Committee, AABANY
conducts a monthly free legal advice and referral clinic in the
Community Room at 33 Bowery Street (Confucius Plaza) from 6:30 PM - 8:30
PM. Those needing legal assistance should bring all documents
pertaining to their legal issues to the clinic location, no earlier than
6:00 PM on the given day.
Since the inauguration of this monthly pro bono clinic in 2015,
hundreds of low-income community members have received thoughtful advice
and appropriate legal referral from AABANY members.
Attorney volunteers do not need to be specialists or have expertise in a
specific area of law. Attorney volunteers will only be rendering legal
advice and will not take on any legal representation. All volunteers
must be AABANY members for professional liability coverage purposes.
Volunteers may sign up here to become an AABANY member or can do so at the Pro Bono Clinic.
Volunteers - attorneys and interpreters - should bring open ears,
patience, and compassion. All volunteers should arrive by 6:15 PM and
will be given an orientation before the start of the clinic. Attorneys
and interpreters interested in volunteering for the Pro Bono Clinic

Lauren Yee is the New
York-based playwright of CAMBODIAN ROCK BAND, which has had sold out
runs across the country, and is finally landing in New York starting this month.
The
show celebrates the extraordinary power of Asian American stories and
artists. It's also a show that humanizes Cambodia's ongoing Khmer
Rouge/Extraordinary Chambers/human rights tribunals in powerful, joyful,
music-drenched ways and centers on a young Cambodian American woman
involved in the trials.
Tickets are $35 each, but AABANY members will get a $10 discount.
Join the Young Lawyers Committee for a delicious, all-you-can-eat dim sum brunch in Chinatown on Sunday, February 16, from 12-2 PM at Downtown Yummy (39 E. Broadway). The Women's Committee has organized a lunch with Sandra Ung, Special Assistant to Congresswoman Grace Meng and Executive Director of At the Table PAC on February 25 at 1pm. The Women's Committee launched a Brown Bag Lunch series to feature prominent Asian American women in the law. Through these lunches we aim to create an intimate space that allows for open dialogue on real issues that Asian American women face in the legal community. We are excited to have Ms. Ung join us for a discussion on her work in government and in electing more women and individuals from underserved communities to federal office. A resident of Queens, Ms. Ung has dedicated her life to public service. AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.
