November 16, 2020: The World Journal published an article titled "「紐約亞裔律師協會」推出律師轉介服務幫助亞裔尋找具資格的律師" about the launch of AABANY's Legal Referral and Information Service (LRIS).

The LRIS will connect members of the New York Asian American community with qualified legal counsel, who speak languages including English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, and Japanese.

September 21, 2020 and September 24, 2020: The American Bazaar and India Currents published articles about Former AABANY Board Director Diane Gujarati being confirmed to serve as a District Judge in the Eastern District of New York. She is the first South Asian Article III federal judge in New York.

September 2, 2020: AABANY Tax Committee Co-Chair Libin Zhang published his law review article about the proposed Pied-à-Terre tax impact on Real Estate in the New York Law Journal.

 September 1, 2020: AABANY Issues Committee Chair, Asia Practice Committee Co-Chair and Board Director Chris Kwok published an article in the New York Law Journal entitled “Mediating Employment Disputes Ethically: Ensuring Quality and Fairness in the #MeToo, #BLM, #COVID-19 Era.”

July 28, 2020: AABANY is excited to announce that Immediate Past President Brian Song and President Sapna Palla have been included in the 2020 Power List of the 100 Most Influential Asian Americans in New York Politics & Policy, released by City & State. Brian and Sapna are jointly recognized as 52nd on the list.

City & State wrote: 

The Asian American Bar Association’s mission is to ensure “the meaningful participation of Asian-Americans in the legal profession.” It has made strides under Sapna Palla, a partner at Wiggin and Dana LLP, who is the president for the 2020-2021 term, and under her immediate predecessor, Brian Song, a partner at the top law firm Baker & Hostetler LLP. The organization recently surpassed 1,400 paid members.

July 26, 2020Mewfun published an article on AABANY’s collaboration with Community Land Trust (CLT) to provide language assistance to over 100 Asian Americans in applying for the COVID Rent Relief Program.

The event team consisted of 25 lawyers and volunteer law students. The team offered service in different languages, including Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghai and Fuzhou dialects. Through the event, many Asian Americans and seniors, who usually struggle with using technology, were able to gain a better understanding of the Program’s details and submit all required documents to potentially qualify to become beneficiaries.

July 18, 2020: AABANY Executive Director Yang Chen was quoted in an NBC News article titled "New York police create Asian hate crimes task force." Speaking about the increase of hate crimes against Asian Americans, Yang states, "AABANY will continue its efforts to encourage victims to come forward and report anti-Asian violence and harassment, to seek justice, and to educate the broader community about eradicating racism and xenophobia in our society."

July 13, 2020: Military & Veterans Affairs Committee Co-Chair Dong Joo Lee published an Op-Ed in NJ.com titled "Edison. Do better."

In the Op-Ed, Dong wrote about the lack of action from the local elected representatives in response to the bias incidents and hate crimes against Asian Americans in Edison, New Jersey. Edison is one of the most diverse cities in the country, yet anti-Asian American sentiments have been widespread well before the COVID-19 crisis. Dong states: "it is clear that there is much room for improvement here in this township. Something that all of us should consider during this election cycle."

July 8, 2020: Over 100 Jurists of Color in New York, Including 6 AABANY Members from Queens, Sign Letter Affirming Equal Justice in Court

On July 8, 2020, over 100 jurists of color across New York, including 13 Queens judges of color, have added their names to a statewide letter affirming their commitment to equal justice and treatment under the law. Of the 13 Queens judges, six are members of the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY): Hon. Karen Gopee, Hon. Wyatt Gibbons, Hon. Phillip Hom, Hon. Dean Kusakabe, Hon. John Lansden, and Hon. Toko Serita.

June 26, 2020: The New York Law Journal announced the winners of the coveted 2020 Rising Stars category. This award recognizes the region’s most promising lawyers who are no older than 40 by the submission date. AABANY is proud to announce that three of the twenty seven recipients are members.

On June 19, 2020, USA Today published an Op-Ed written by Ryan D. Budhu, a member of the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) and past president of the South Asian Bar Association of New York (SABANY).

In the article, Budhu recounts his personal experience with police brutality, when his brother died in the custody of the NYPD. He also reflects on this tragedy in relation to the death of George Floyd, and the need for allyship between South Asian and Black communities. He writes: “I have a duty to listen to and help address inequities, especially those that affect Black lives within the circles that I occupy.”

May 28, 2020: AABANY's “Fortune 500 General Counsel Panel: Leadership During Crisis” webinar on May 21, 2020 was covered by Corporate Counsel.

The event highlighted prominent General Counsels working in various industries and discussed the impact of COVID-19 in the workplace along with advice for aspiring General Counsels.

May 28, 2020: AABANY Member Shengyang Wu was quoted in a chinaqw.com article titled "纽约州法院复工 华人关心的房屋问题可递交审理." Shengyang discussed the resumption of work in New York State courts and also mentioned AABANY's plan to resume community legal aid work virtually.

 May 27, 2020: Pro Bono and Community Service Committee co-chair Karen Lin writes about why we celebrate Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month for the Historical Society of the New York Courts blog.


A first generation immigrant herself, Lin attempts to define what it means to be “Asian American".

Lin embeds a powerful lesson in her article: Asian Americans will no longer accept being silenced, blamed, or overlooked. This month is only the first step on the journey ahead.

May 21, 2020: Global Investigations Review published an article co-authored by AABANY Asia Practice Committee Co-Chair Jian Wu. The article is titled “Why Anti-bribery Enforcement Scrutiny in China Is Here to Stay.”

The article discusses how the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are increasingly enforcing the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) against US public companies with operations in China.

May 11, 2020: AABANY Member and immigration attorney Tsui Yee was quoted in an NPR story by Alina Selyukh entitled “Will Filing For Unemployment Hurt My Green Card? Legal Immigrants Are Afraid.”

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread and leave millions of people jobless, legal immigrants working and paying taxes in the US fear that applying for unemployment might jeopardize their immigration cases. Tsui noted that even though these individuals are eligible to collect unemployment, many chose not to out of fear that doing so will somehow trigger a red flag with immigration services.

April 28, 2020: AABANY Immigration Law Committee Co-Chair Jessie Liu was quoted in a chinaqw.com article about the lay off of employees due to the "60-day suspension of immigration" administrative order and pandemic. Jessie provided advice in the article for H-1 B visa holders.

April 1, 2020: Law 360 published an article co-authored by Immediate Past President Brian Song. The article is entitled “Responding To DOJ’s Increasing Int’l Antitrust Extraditions.”

The article discusses how the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice is increasingly using extradition to prosecute individuals alleged to have violated U.S. law. It discusses various recent cases where extradition has successfully been exercised, mainly from Italy and Germany, by the Department of Justice solely based on an antitrust charge.

March 26, 2020: The New York Daily News published an op-ed co-authored by Chris Kwok. The piece is entitled “Weaponized coronavirus language is endangering Asian-American lives.” (Chris, who sits on the AABANY Board and chairs the Issues Committee, co-wrote the op-ed in his capacity as a Board member of the Asian American Federation).

The article discusses how anti-Asian rhetoric and labeling the coronavirus as “the Chinese virus” is endangering the lives of Asian Americans across the United States.

March 6, 2020: The Korean Channel (TKC) News, New York and New Jersey’s Korean news channel, covered a press conference leading up to AABANY’s upcoming Pro Bono Clinic in Queens conducted in coordination with Sandra Ung, New York State Committeewoman.

TKC News elaborated on how AABANY plans to provide free legal assistance to Asian-American community members who face significant language barriers and financial obstacles.

February 6, 2020: AABANY Board Director Chris Kwok was quoted in a Politico article on Mayor Bill de Blasio's silence about specialized school reform during his State of the City speech.

As a pro-test education advocate, Chris notes: “It’s kind of become a toxic issue for him so I feel like he’s steering clear of it. He doesn’t want to put the work in to repair that."

January 30, 2020: Membership Director Beatrice Leong was interviewed by Reema Khrais on her podcast called “This Is Uncomfortable.”

During the interview which was broadcast on NPR, Beatrice shared a very personal story about why she decided to become a divorce lawyer. The interview talks about the complicated dynamics that accompany a divorce, including how financially and emotionally draining it can be.

January 28, 2020 and February 7, 2020: Epoch Times and New York Law Journal published articles about Judge Denny Chin receiving the Honorable Harold Baer Jr. Award from the Network of Bar Leaders at the Southern District of New York on January 27, 2020.

Judge Chin was recognized for his leadership in the legal community, his dedication to promoting diversity, and his impact as a trailblazer in the Asian American community and for serving as a role model and inspiration to generations of law students and lawyers.
