Anti-Asian Violence and what to do if they encounter it, against
themselves or others.
On May 8, 2020, the Membership Committee hosted their weekly Zoom Membership Mixer, with 20 participants in attendance. The question posed to the participants was, “If you could choose only one movie, book or TV series to watch or read repeatedly for a one year quarantine, what would that be?” Members said they would choose: Harry Potter, The Office, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Seinfeld, The Dream of Red Chamber, On a Pale Horse, Matrix Trilogy, and Blade Runner.

On Wednesday, April 29, 2020, the Asian American Bar Association
(AABANY) hosted a webinar titled “Anti-Asian Violence and Hate Arising
from the COVID-19 Pandemic.” This webinar examined the recent trends and
data gathering of Anti-Asian violence incidents, as well as the legal
framework of hate crimes under New York and Federal law. The nearly 100
attorneys who attended were given resources to advise the community as
to their rights, along with opportunities to volunteer with AABANY.

The application period for any one of four vacancies being filled at this time has been extended to May 29th, 2020. I have attached a link to the public announcement seeking applicants for currently vacant positions and upcoming vacancies. This is perhaps a unique time in the history of the federal court in this, the Eastern District of New York; I do not have any record of this number of opportunities being available at the same time since the US Magistrate Judge positions were created.
The United States Constitution requires that the nation’s population be accurately counted every ten years via the census. The data collected from the census ensures equal access to important governmental and private resources for
all Americans. This includes how federal funding is allocated to states and localities.
Census results also impact the number of seats each state has in congress and your political representation at all levels of government. The data collected by the census affects how district lines are drawn for the U.S. House of Representatives,
state legislatures, and local boards.
Asian Americans are one of the fastest growing groups in the United States. For Asian American communities to be properly represented in government decision making and to receive a proper allocation of funding, we must complete the
census.
You can complete the census online by clicking on the link below. It is easy and only takes about 10 minutes to complete. Your submission will help direct billions of dollars in federal aid to local communities for various public services.

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and
coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times,
we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize
a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the
needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.
