On September 25 and 26, AABANY held its 11th Annual Fall Conference, this time on Zoom. We thank the nearly 400 registrants who made our first (and we hope last and only) virtual conference a success. From the GC Roundtable that kicked off the conference on Friday afternoon to the Plenary Session that closed out the conference on Saturday afternoon, we were privileged to present a total of six CLE programs on highly topical subjects relevant to the challenges presented by COVID-19 and the current racial reckoning that the country faces.
Thanks to all the Program Chairs for organizing the CLE programs and all the panelists who engaged, educated and enlightened our attendees with their expertise, knowledge and wisdom.
Thanks to our Gold Sponsor Broadridge and Silver Sponsor Con Ed as well as our year-round Annual Dinner sponsors for making the Fall Conference possible.
Be on the lookout for blog posts about the 2020 Fall Conference CLE programs. If you have any questions or feedback about the Fall Conference, please contact cle@aabany.org.

This fall, AABANY is launching a legal referral and information service (“LRIS”) as a public service primarily to help the general public, and especially the Asian American community. The goals of the LRIS are to provide information and referrals, to recommend lawyers or other resources to provide competent, ethical legal advice and representation, to educate the public about legal representation and to increase respect for the legal profession.
We are seeking qualified and experienced lawyers to serve on the panels of lawyers eligible to receive referrals from AABANY’s LRIS. Our current plan is to start the program on October 1st or as soon thereafter as possible.
This is a vital program for AABANY that we anticipate will greatly benefit our panelists and fellow members as well as the public, and especially the Asian American community. If you would like to apply to be considered for the LRIS panel, please contact main@aabany.org and we will send you an application form. If you have any questions, please send them to the same address.
We hope you can join us in the launch of this important new AABANY initiative.
Due to high demand, the AABANY Mentorship Program is in need of additional mentors! Please consider joining as a mentor—you can make a meaningful difference in the career of a more junior attorney. Even junior associates (with at least one year of experience) are eligible to serve as mentors, as many of our mentees are law students seeking advice on the transition from student life to professional life. Our mentors find the AABANY Mentorship Program to be highly gratifying, and many take on more than one mentee. The minimum time commitment is only one meeting with each mentee per quarter. Please consider joining today!
If you are interested in helping us as a Mentor, contact Shruti Chopra at shrutichopra14@gmail.com or Joseph Eng at jeng@kslaw.com, Co-Chairs of the Mentorship Program.
The typical Asian American formula for success goes something like this: Study really hard in school, graduate at the top of your class, attend an Ivy League college, meet an Ivy League spouse, attend an Ivy League grad school, land that six-figure job at a top law firm / bank / fund / hospital / Google… and then never stop working as hard as humanly possible. Be the first one in the office and the last one out. Keep your head down and let your work speak for itself. Say yes to everything. Please everyone.
I lived by this formula almost all my life. And now, I am trying to unlearn it all. Read more
The COVID-19 era has brought more challenges to our Asian American community in New York, with anti-Asian violence on the rise and many New Yorkers facing serious legal issues in housing and immigration, as well as challenges due to economic
hardships. Our Pro Bono Clinic has gone remote to provide legal information and assistance.
To raise funds for our Pro Bono Clinic,

Having tried numerous high-profile fraud and corruption cases as a veteran prosecutor for the DOJ’s Criminal Division, Ted brings a thorough understanding of white collar defense and compliance to clients under investigation by federal agencies. Ted recently has represented numerous entities and individuals in connection with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference with the 2016 presidential election.

Asian Americans are one of the fastest growing groups in the United States. For Asian American communities to be properly represented in government decision making and to receive a proper allocation of funding, we must complete the census.

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and
coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times,
we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize
a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.
PLEASE NOTE that the Community Response Task Force form has been updated. Even if you have already filled out the form, we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
The Judiciary Committee has created a clerkship directory to gather information about our members who may be willing to act as future resources and/or ultimately want to become a judge. If you've ever clerked for a judge, please take a minute to fill out this survey and forward to others here. We appreciate your help!
