This fall, AABANY is launching a legal referral and information service (“LRIS”) as a public service primarily to help the general public, and especially the Asian American community. The goals of the LRIS are to provide information and referrals, to recommend lawyers or other resources to provide competent, ethical legal advice and representation, to educate the public about legal representation and to increase respect for the legal profession.
We are seeking qualified and experienced lawyers to serve on the panels of lawyers eligible to receive referrals from AABANY’s LRIS. Our current plan is to start the program on October 1st or as soon thereafter as possible.
This is a vital program for AABANY that we anticipate will greatly benefit our panelists and fellow members as well as the public, and especially the Asian American community. If you would like to apply to be considered for the LRIS panel, please contact main@aabany.org and we will send you an application form. If you have any questions, please send them to the same address.
We hope you can join us in the launch of this important new AABANY initiative. |

The Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) congratulates Tax Committee Co-Chair Libin Zhang on his recent law review article about the proposed Pied-à-Terre tax impact on Real Estate in the New York Law Journal.
The article begins as follows:
It is no secret that the coronavirus pandemic has reduced New York City’s government revenues: sales taxes are down due to a decline in retail sales, there is less use of public transportation, and some individuals have moved out of the city. But as the late 20th century American proverb goes, in every crisis there is opportunity. A revised “pied-à-terre tax” has been introduced in both chambers of the New York State Legislature, which would create an annual property tax of up to 13.5% on certain residential properties with assessed values of $300,000 or more.
Although the latest pied-à-terre tax proposal is an improvement on prior versions, for example by no longer imposing the tax on most rental properties, some issues and questions remain. The tax, if enacted, may affect New York City real estate.

AABANY will be a community partner for two film screenings for the 2020 Asian American International Film Festival this fall. These two film screenings include:
Aswang (Dir. Alyx Ayn Arumpac)
This film is geoblocked to the USA.
Since President Rodrigo Duterte took office in 2016 and announced his campaign to rid the Philippines of drug addicts and dealers, as many as 20,000 Filipinos have been murdered. ASWANG confronts these executions and their devastating aftermath.
Coded Bias (Dir. Shalini Kantayya)
CODED BIAS explores the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini’s startling discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces and women accurately and her push for legislative protection against biased AI. For more details on AAIFF43 and how to register for the AABANY discount code, click here. |

Due to high demand, the AABANY Mentorship Program is in need of additional mentors! Please consider joining as a mentor—you can make a meaningful difference in the career of a more junior attorney. Even junior associates (with at least one year of experience) are eligible to serve as mentors, as many of our mentees are law students seeking advice on the transition from student life to professional life. Our mentors find the AABANY Mentorship Program to be highly gratifying, and many take on more than one mentee. The minimum time commitment is only one meeting with each mentee per quarter. Please consider joining today! To learn more about the program, go to https://www.aabany.org/?page=944 If you are interested in helping us as a Mentor, contact Shruti Chopra at shrutichopra14@gmail.com or Joseph Eng at jeng@kslaw.com, Co-Chairs of the Mentorship Program. |

The COVID-19 era has brought more challenges to our Asian American community in New York, with anti-Asian violence on the rise and many New Yorkers facing serious legal issues in housing and immigration, as well as challenges due to economic
hardships. Our Pro Bono Clinic has gone remote to provide legal information and assistance.
To raise funds for our Pro Bono Clinic,
AABANY member Joane Siyan Wong has created a "One Humanity Against the Virus" button. Buy one for $10 or two for $15 at
https://www.aabany.org/store/ListProducts.aspx?catid=797146
Please show your support by buying one, two or a dozen buttons. Help spread the message of unity, fight anti-Asian violence and harassment, and support the efforts of the Pro Bono Clinic. Thank you!

On October 2, 2020, the Membership Committee hosted their weekly virtual Membership Mixer, with 13 participants in attendance. Recently, Membership Committee has used Remo, a new dinner party style platform to hold the mixer. Attendees have the flexibility to visit multiple tables and mix and mingle with guests in a six person group. The icebreaker question this week asked participants if they are looking forward to indoor dining at 25% capacity.
The Membership Committee previously hosted Monthly Mixers at bars, ballparks, stadiums, operas, etc, but due to COVID, we have moved online to offer members a weekly outlet to share their feelings, see old friends, and make new connections. Mixers start at 6:30pm on Friday and the main event ends at 7:30pm but people often stay on after 7:30pm for smaller breakout groups. Mixers are not recorded, and are LIVE, so don't miss out.
Membership Committee plans to continue hosting weekly virtual mixers until it is safe to gather together again in person.
We are giving away door prizes in some weeks. In order to win, you must be a member and must RSVP on the aabany.org calendar entry to get a raffle number. Non-members can join the mixer but won't be eligible to win a prize.
This week AABANY is co-hosting with FALANY. Please be sure to gather all your favorite Filipino and non-Filipino friends to attend this Friday, October 9, 2020. Register by this Thursday here.

Asian Americans are one of the fastest growing groups in the United States. For Asian American communities to be properly represented in government decision making and to receive a proper allocation of funding, we must complete the census. The deadline to complete the census has been extended until October 31.

| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and
coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times,
we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize
a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.
PLEASE NOTE that the Community Response Task Force form has been updated. Even if you have already filled out the form, we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
