One Case, Many Takeaways: Bei Yang’s Experience with AABANY Remote Pro Bono Legal Clinic

As an out-of-state law graduate from Tennessee, I was not familiar with any specific New York practice rules. While waiting for my bar exam results and preparing for my legal career in New York, and with the encouragement of my mentor Mr. Rocky Chin, I participated in the AABANY Remote Pro Bono Legal Clinic. The Clinic provides legal information and referrals to individuals, particularly those with limited English proficiency, with legal issues such as immigration, housing, employment, family, elder law, anti-Asian violence, and those pertaining to small businesses. AABANY Co-Sponsors: Judicial, Academic, and Community Lenses to Reentry - A National Conversation, December 9

AABANY is proud to partner with the American Muslim Bar Association in hosting "Judicial, Academic, and Community Lenses to Reentry - A National Conversation" on Wednesday, December 9 from 3:00-4:00pm. The panelists include:

This session brings together experts from reentry Courts, Clinics, and Programs in the District of Columbia, Philadelphia, and New York City. The panelists will share their unique judicial, academic, and activist practices in the field of reentry, and address how best to tackle current barriers to reentry, particularly in a pandemic. The aim of the panel is to encourage students, lawyers, and community members to become involved in reentry work, and to allow the panelists to collectively problem-solve around legal and community challenges to reentry. We hope you will attend. Please register here: bit.ly/reentrydiscussion.

AABANY Co-Sponsors: Buck For Your Art: Legal Tools For Turning Art Into Profit (CLE), December 11

While creators are embodying their visions into art and after the works are fixed and can be admired or traded in the art market, how can copyright holders and creators gain economic benefit from their creations? In the US, moral rights alone do not offer sufficient opportunities to continue sharing in monetary appreciation of art once it leaves the studio. This discussion will cover business and legal considerations to utilize intellectual creations.

Presentations by attorneys Jana S. Farmer, Partner and Chair of the Art Law Practice at Wilson Elser, and AABANY IP Committee Co-Chair Gregory Pan, Head of Legal Affairs at (RED), will focus on the ways to ensure that artists get fair value for their creations and brand, from sales, consignments, and licensing in the traditional and digital marketplaces, moderated by Irina Tarsis, Founder and Managing Director of the Center for Art Law.

Free for AABANY members, but registration is required. Please click on the flyer below to register and for more details.

AABANY SOC Presents: Inter-APALSA Pre-OCI Mock Interview Workshop Event, January 4

The Student Outreach Committee is excited to announce its Inter-APALSA Pre-OCI Mock Interview Workshop in collaboration with Columbia APALSA! *The deadline to register for this event is Wednesday, December 30, at 5 PM*

Students: Our AABANY attorney volunteers are from different practice areas and they will help you polish your interviewing skills through 1-1 sessions. Please join us and learn tips on how to build strong interview techniques and gain insights on what employers look for! The workshop will begin promptly at 6:00 PM, the first 30 minutes will consist of interview techniques, dos and don'ts, and Zoom appropriate attire. Mock interviews will be held promptly between 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM with your respective assigned attorney and designated time slot.

Volunteer Attorneys: Due to extraordinary circumstances and the unstable market, it is now more important than ever to give back to our students. We cordially invite you to join us as attorney volunteers in mock interviewing students in preparation for the delayed recruiting season. Your help at the workshop often provides the key difference for our students as they fine-tune their interviewing skills, as many do not otherwise have any attorney mentors in their networks or families. Should you be unable to participate for the entire 6:30 - 8:00 PM, your availability for one session (20-30 minutes) would still be extremely valuable. We would like to welcome any interested volunteers and invite you to sign up at our registration link below.

Students RSVP HERE. Volunteer Attorneys RSVP HERE.

Don H. Liu Scholars Program: Application Deadline Coming Up on December 31

The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is proud to announce that applications for the Don H. Liu Scholars Program (“DHL Program”) are now open. The DHL Program was founded in 2014 by two past presidents of AABANY and seeks to identify and cultivate future Asian American leaders in the legal community to address the single most important reality facing Asian American professionals today: the barrier to advancement.

This year, the Selection Committee will select up to three scholars. Each scholar will be awarded $15,000 and will have access to prominent mentors, including Don H. Liu, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal and Risk Officer of Target Corporation. The DHL Program will also provide assistance in OCI (on campus interview) bidding strategy, professional and soft-skills development and networking opportunities, including identifying potential internships. Details and more information about the DHL Program can be found at http://www.donhliuscholars.org/.

To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must (i) be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of Asian descent; (ii) be enrolled full-time as a 1L in a J.D. program at an ABA-accredited and approved law school in the U.S.; (iii) demonstrate exceptional academic accomplishments and leadership; (iv) demonstrate financial need; and (v) intend to practice in the private sector in the New York City metropolitan area following graduation. For more details on the application process and eligibility requirements, please find the application package here: http://www.donhliuscholars.org/application/.

Application materials are due by 11:59pm (Eastern Standard Time), December 31, 2020.

Join AABANY’s Legal Referral and Information Service Panel

This fall, AABANY is launching a legal referral and information service (“LRIS”) as a public service primarily to help the general public, and especially the Asian American community. The goals of the LRIS are to provide information and referrals, to recommend lawyers or other resources to provide competent, ethical legal advice and representation, to educate the public about legal representation and to increase respect for the legal profession.

We are seeking qualified and experienced lawyers to serve on the panels of lawyers eligible to receive referrals from AABANY’s LRIS. Our current plan is to start the program on October 1st or as soon thereafter as possible.

This is a vital program for AABANY that we anticipate will greatly benefit our panelists and fellow members as well as the public, and especially the Asian American community. If you would like to apply to be considered for the LRIS panel, please contact main@aabany.org and we will send you an application form. If you have any questions, please send them to the same address.

We hope you can join us in the launch of this important new AABANY initiative.

Join the AABANY Community Response Task Force

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.

The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.

PLEASE NOTE that the  Community Response Task Force form has been updated.  Even if you have already filled out the form,  we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
