AABANY Congratulates Military & Veterans Affairs Committee Co-Chair Dong Joo Lee on His Promotion to Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy Reserves

Please join AABANY in congratulating Military & Veterans Affairs Committee Co-Chair Dong Joo Lee on his recent selection to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy Reserves. He will be one of ten Asian-Americans in the entire Navy JAG Corps to be at this rank.

Dong was on active duty for almost seven years, serving in various duty stations including Guantanamo Bay, Korea, and the Pentagon. Upon leaving active duty, Dong remained in the JAG Corps as a part-time reservist and currently drills out of Washington Navy Yard. As a civilian, he worked as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, clerked at the Eastern District of New York for Judges Dora L. Irizarry and Roslynn R. Mauskopf, and is now a law clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Dong has been, and continues to be, a great Co-Chair for the MVA Committee and an active supporter of AABANY and other sister bar associations. Congratulations, Dong!

Sandra Ung, Former AABANY Treasurer, Runs for City Council on Platform of Unity for the Flushing Community

Former AABANY Treasurer and longtime community advocate Sandra Ung has announced her candidacy for New York City Council for the upcoming 2021 election. Sandra, who has dedicated her life to serving the Queens community, hopes to use her extensive experience in and passion for law and public service to best support and represent the Flushing community.

Growing up, Sandra always knew she wanted to be a lawyer. “I’ve always believed that it’s important to advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves,” she said in a recent interview. Sandra, who is ethnically Chinese, fled Cambodia during the genocide and immigrated to the United States when she was just seven years old. Soon after, she moved to Flushing, where she has called home ever since. But growing up as an immigrant presented many challenges. Read more here.

AABANY SOC Presents: Inter-APALSA Pre-OCI Mock Interview Workshop Event, January 4

The Student Outreach Committee is excited to announce its Inter-APALSA Pre-OCI Mock Interview Workshop in collaboration with Columbia APALSA! *The deadline to register for this event is Wednesday, December 30, at 5 PM*

Students: Our AABANY attorney volunteers are from different practice areas and they will help you polish your interviewing skills through 1-1 sessions. Please join us and learn tips on how to build strong interview techniques and gain insights on what employers look for! The workshop will begin promptly at 6:00 PM, the first 30 minutes will consist of interview techniques, dos and don'ts, and Zoom appropriate attire. Mock interviews will be held promptly between 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM with your respective assigned attorney and designated time slot.

Volunteer Attorneys: Due to extraordinary circumstances and the unstable market, it is now more important than ever to give back to our students. We cordially invite you to join us as attorney volunteers in mock interviewing students in preparation for the delayed recruiting season. Your help at the workshop often provides the key difference for our students as they fine-tune their interviewing skills, as many do not otherwise have any attorney mentors in their networks or families. Should you be unable to participate for the entire 6:30 - 8:00 PM, your availability for one session (20-30 minutes) would still be extremely valuable. We would like to welcome any interested volunteers and invite you to sign up at our registration link below.

Students RSVP HERE. Volunteer Attorneys RSVP HERE.

Highlights from the 2020 Fall Conference

Don H. Liu Scholars Program: Application Deadline Coming Up on December 31

The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is proud to announce that applications for the Don H. Liu Scholars Program (“DHL Program”) are now open. The DHL Program was founded in 2014 by two past presidents of AABANY and seeks to identify and cultivate future Asian American leaders in the legal community to address the single most important reality facing Asian American professionals today: the barrier to advancement.

This year, the Selection Committee will select up to three scholars. Each scholar will be awarded $15,000 and will have access to prominent mentors, including Don H. Liu, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal and Risk Officer of Target Corporation. The DHL Program will also provide assistance in OCI (on campus interview) bidding strategy, professional and soft-skills development and networking opportunities, including identifying potential internships. Details and more information about the DHL Program can be found at http://www.donhliuscholars.org/.

To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must (i) be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of Asian descent; (ii) be enrolled full-time as a 1L in a J.D. program at an ABA-accredited and approved law school in the U.S.; (iii) demonstrate exceptional academic accomplishments and leadership; (iv) demonstrate financial need; and (v) intend to practice in the private sector in the New York City metropolitan area following graduation. For more details on the application process and eligibility requirements, please find the application package here: http://www.donhliuscholars.org/application/.

Application materials are due by 11:59pm (Eastern Standard Time), December 31, 2020.

Join AABANY’s Legal Referral and Information Service Panel

This fall, AABANY is launching a legal referral and information service (“LRIS”) as a public service primarily to help the general public, and especially the Asian American community. The goals of the LRIS are to provide information and referrals, to recommend lawyers or other resources to provide competent, ethical legal advice and representation, to educate the public about legal representation and to increase respect for the legal profession.

We are seeking qualified and experienced lawyers to serve on the panels of lawyers eligible to receive referrals from AABANY’s LRIS. Our current plan is to start the program on October 1st or as soon thereafter as possible.

This is a vital program for AABANY that we anticipate will greatly benefit our panelists and fellow members as well as the public, and especially the Asian American community. If you would like to apply to be considered for the LRIS panel, please contact main@aabany.org and we will send you an application form. If you have any questions, please send them to the same address.

We hope you can join us in the launch of this important new AABANY initiative.

Join the AABANY Community Response Task Force

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.

The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.

PLEASE NOTE that the  Community Response Task Force form has been updated.  Even if you have already filled out the form,  we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
