Join AABANY and SABANY for the 5 Boro Bike Tour, May 3

Ever wonder what it feels like to ride the streets of the five boroughs of New York City car-free -- including riding on the upper level of the Ed Koch Queensborough Bridge and the Verazzano Bridge (which is open to bikers only for the 5 Boro Bike tour)? Then come ride with the AABANY-SABANY team for the 5 Boro Bike Tour, taking place on Sunday, May 3.

Our teams will be raising money for our Pro Bono Clinics, which are serving under-served and under-represented Asian American and South Asian communities in New York City.

We are asking each participant to donate or raise $400 (or more) to be part of the AABANY-SABANY team, which will cover the registration fees, with the excess to be donated to support AABANY’s Pro Bono Clinic and SABANY’s Pro Bono Clinic.

Details are being finalized right now, but if you are interested in finding out more or to be notified when final details are available, contact us at main@aabany.org, and we will keep you in the loop.

Monthly Pro Bono Clinic, March 11

Through its Pro Bono & Community Service Committee, AABANY conducts a monthly free legal advice and referral clinic in the Community Room at 33 Bowery Street (Confucius Plaza) from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM. Those needing legal assistance should bring all documents pertaining to their legal issues to the clinic location, no earlier than 6:00 PM on the given day.

Since the inauguration of this monthly pro bono clinic in 2015, hundreds of low-income community members have received thoughtful advice and appropriate legal referral from AABANY members.

Attorney volunteers do not need to be specialists or have expertise in a specific area of law. Attorney volunteers will only be rendering legal advice and will not take on any legal representation. All volunteers must be AABANY members for professional liability coverage purposes. Volunteers may sign up here to become an AABANY member or can do so at the Pro Bono Clinic.

Volunteers - attorneys and interpreters - should bring open ears, patience, and compassion. All volunteers should arrive by 6:15 PM and will be given an orientation before the start of the clinic. Attorneys and interpreters interested in volunteering for the Pro Bono Clinic should contact Asako.Aiba@aabany.org.

AABANY's First Pro Bono Clinic in Queens, March 17

AABANY's Pro Bono & Community Service Committee will conduct its first Legal Advice & Referral Pro Bono Clinic in Queens, NY on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The clinic will be held at the Office of NYS Committeewoman Sandra Ung, 135-15 40th Road, Rm 401 Flushing, Queens. Unlike our clinics in Manhattan and Brooklyn, this clinic will see clients by appointment only, not walk-in.

The Pro Bono Committee is seeking volunteer attorneys who practice in the following areas of law, and language interpreters, for the Pro Bono Clinic in Queens for the corresponding Clinic dates:

March 17, 2020 -  HOUSING LAW (including coops)
April 15, 2020 - IMMIGRATION LAW
May 20, 2020 - ELDER LAW & BENEFITS
June 17, 2020 - FAMILY/MATRIMONIAL/EDUCATION LAW

Attorney volunteers will only be rendering legal information and advice and will not take on any legal representation. All volunteers who will be participating in client consultations must be AABANY members for professional liability coverage purposes. Volunteers may sign up here to become an AABANY member or can do so at the Pro Bono Clinic. Interpreter volunteers should be fluent in English and at least one of the following languages: Cantonese Chinese, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean or other Asian languages or dialects. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Asako.Aiba@aabany.org

Join the AABANY Community Response Task Force

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.

The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.
