AABANY regrets that due to the health risks and safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, we are canceling all upcoming CLE and other public, in-person events until further notice. Because there is no vaccine currently available for the COVID-19, social distancing is one of the best ways to slow the spread of the virus. Also, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) guidelines, everyone can practice daily prevention measures to protect themselves and prevent the spread of the virus. Such measures include frequently washing your hand with soap, using hand sanitizer, staying home when you feel sick, and making sure to cover your coughs and sneezes. To learn more about COVID-19 from the CDC, please visit the following link: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/index.html
Your health is important to us, and we encourage you to take precautions to protect yourself and your community from getting and spreading the virus.
In the coming weeks, AABANY hopes to make certain programs available through online or virtual meetings. Please stay tuned for updates. If you have any inquiries about the status of any upcoming events, please email main@aabany.org.
On March 11, 2020, the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA) sent two letters to House and Senate leadership, urging them to call for unity and publicly denounce the increase in racist attacks and discrimination against the Asian American community, in the wake of rising concerns over the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
AABANY is proud to be among the signatories for these letters. While we recognize the growing public health and economic threat the virus poses, we believe our leadership needs to be grounded in truth and committed to taking on racism and xenophobia directly.
The Asian American Law Fund of New York (AALFNY) invites law students to apply for our Community Service Scholarship Awards. AALFNY will award Scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each to up to three law students with a demonstrated commitment to the Asian American community. The purpose of the award is to assist law students with their tuition while encouraging them to use their legal knowledge and training to benefit the Asian American community in New York and to foster commitment by law students to public service to the Asian American community in New York.
Applicants should include a description of their proposed summer community service project and the name, email address and phone number of a supervisor at the community service organization or other organization that the Scholarship Committee may contact. Confirmation of the public service project is not required at the time of the application, but will be required before the award of the scholarship. Applicants are responsible for arranging their own projects.
Please visit https://www.asianamericanlawfund.org/community-service-scholarships/ for details and to download the application. Deadline to apply is April 10, 2020.
AABANY values its members. We are offering a promotion for those of you whose membership has lapsed. We would hate to lose your membership and are writing with a special offer in hopes you will renew now.
AABANY members are part of a vibrant community of attorneys in the private and public sector, along with judges, academics, law students and legal professionals in New York. We are the largest minority bar association in New York and one of the most active, with numerous CLE programs throughout the year at which you can develop professionally and expand your professional networks. We connect socially at fun events, like sports and cultural outings, such as Mets and Yankees games this past summer and most recently a night at the opera at the Met.
As previously notified, members of AABANY are eligible for complimentary membership in the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA).
To get the 20% discount code, contact us at membership@aabany.org and we will send you instructions. Once you have renewed, we will follow up with the special code you need to activate your free NAPABA Membership.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact membership@aabany.org. We hope to see you soon at a future AABANY event.
PLEASE NOTE: This clinic will proceed but there will be no in-person consultations. Due to current health concerns, all consultations will be done remotely by telephone.
AABANY's Pro Bono & Community Service Committee will conduct its first Legal Advice & Referral Pro Bono Clinic in Queens, NY on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Unlike our clinics in Manhattan and Brooklyn, this clinic will see clients by appointment only, not walk-in.
The Pro Bono Committee is seeking volunteer attorneys who practice in the following areas of law, and language interpreters, for the Pro Bono Clinic in Queens for the corresponding Clinic dates:
March 17, 2020 - HOUSING LAW (including coops) April 15, 2020 - IMMIGRATION LAW May 20, 2020 - ELDER LAW & BENEFITS June 17, 2020 - FAMILY/MATRIMONIAL/EDUCATION LAW
Attorney volunteers will only be rendering legal information and advice and will not take on any legal representation. All volunteers who will be participating in client consultations must be AABANY members for professional liability coverage purposes. Volunteers may sign up here to become an AABANY member or can do so at the Pro Bono Clinic. Interpreter volunteers should be fluent in English and at least one of the following languages: Cantonese Chinese, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean or other Asian languages or dialects. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Asako.Aiba@aabany.org.
AABANY's Queens Pro Bono Clinic is conducted in collaboration with NYS Committeewoman Sandra Ung.
Due to the
growing health risks associated with the outbreaks of the novel
coronavirus, AABANY Pro Bono Committee is canceling the walk-in clinic
scheduled on 3/11 in Manhattan, and 3/26 in Brooklyn to mitigate these
risks. This is disappointing, of course, but the health and safety of
our community members, as well as volunteers, come first as this global
health pandemic unfolds.
We appreciate your continued trust and support. We will update you
regarding whether April clinics would be held as we draw closer to those
dates. If you have any questions, please contact us at
probono@aabany.org or leave a message at 718-228-7206. We will respond
as soon as possible.
AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.
The Judiciary Committee has created a clerkship directory to gather information about our members who may be willing to act as future resources and/or ultimately want to become a judge. If you've ever clerked for a judge, please take a minute to fill out this survey and forward to others here. We appreciate your help!
