On Tuesday, March 31, 2020, the National Council of Asian Pacific
Americans (NCAPA), a coalition of 34 national Asian Pacific American
organizations, held a community briefing call over Zoom on the topic of
increased anti-Asian rhetoric in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Community leaders on the call were joined by legislators serving on the
Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) including
Representative Judy Chu (CA-27), Representative Mark Takano (CA-41),
Representative Ted Lieu (CA-33), and Senator Kamala Harris of
California.
Multiple steps are being taken at the legislative, business,
and grassroots level in order to combat xenophobia and support the Asian
American community in this time of need.

The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) and six other national bar associations released a joint statement denouncing
the rising number of incidents involving anti-Asian discrimination and
racist remarks related to the coronavirus and COVID-19.
The Presidents of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), the American
Bar Association (ABA), the Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA), the
National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL), the National LGBT Bar
(LGBT Bar), the National Native American Bar Association (NNABA), and
the South Asian Bar Association of North America (SABA North America) recorded a video calling for unity in these challenging times.

The United States Constitution requires that the nation’s population be
accurately counted every ten years via the census. The data collected
from the census ensures equal access to important governmental and
private resources for all Americans. This includes how federal funding
is allocated to states and localities.
Census results also impact the number of seats each state has in
congress and your political representation at all levels of government.
The data collected by the census affects how district lines are drawn
for the U.S. House of Representatives, state legislatures, and local
boards.
Asian Americans are one of the fastest growing groups in the United
States. For Asian American communities to be properly represented in
government decision making and to receive a proper allocation of
funding, we must complete the census.

is easy and only takes about 10 minutes to complete. Your submission
will help direct billions of dollars in federal aid to local communities
for various public services.
On April 1, 2020, Law 360 published an article co-authored by
Immediate Past President Brian Song. The article is entitled “Responding
To DOJ’s Increasing Int’l Antitrust Extraditions.”
The article discusses how the Antitrust Division of the Department of
Justice is increasingly using extradition to prosecute individuals
alleged to have violated U.S. law. It discusses various recent cases
where extradition has been successfully exercised, mainly from Italy and
Germany, by the Department of Justice solely based on an antitrust
charge.

The Year End Report reviews the various events and initiatives undertaken by AABANY to further the interest of APA lawyers and recognizes the accomplishments of its members during the past year. The Asian American Law Fund of New York (AALFNY) invites law students to apply for our Community Service Scholarship Awards. AALFNY will award Scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each to up to three law students with a demonstrated commitment to the Asian American community. The purpose of the award is to assist law students with their tuition while encouraging them to use their legal knowledge and training to benefit the Asian American community in New York and to foster commitment by law students to public service to the Asian American community in New York.
Applicants should include a description of their proposed summer community service project and the name, email address and phone number of a supervisor at the community service organization or other organization that the Scholarship Committee may contact. Confirmation of the public service project is not required at the time of the application, but will be required before the award of the scholarship. Applicants are responsible for arranging their own projects.

On April 1, 2020, AABANY held its first Monthly Membership Mixer
virtually on Zoom. Over 25 people joined Brian Song, who became the
Immediate Past President, and Sapna Palla, who officially became
the President of AABANY on the same day.
Overall, our first meeting on Zoom was very lively and went smoothly. In
the coming weeks, AABANY is planning on hosting more and more programs
online, including CLEs and informative webinars. So stay tuned!
AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.
