We invite all AABANY Committees as well as other bar associations, law firms, and other groups to submit programs. The deadline is May 31.
The basic items that the form calls for are:

- CLE category (see here)
- Speaker names and moderator name; and
- Sponsor names, if any.
If you would like to submit a program for consideration, please give thought to the four items above and complete the form by the May 31 deadline.
With regard to speaker names, moderator names and potential sponsors, you can submit names even if they are not yet confirmed, but we will follow up with you after the May 31 submission deadline to lock down those details.
After May 31, the Selection Committee will meet to decide on the programs that will be included in this year's Fall Conference, and we will notify the Program Chairs about the decision by mid-June.

On behalf of Baker’s Asian/South Pacific Affinity Group, AABANY, and KALAGNY, and in honor of Asian American Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month, please join us for a fireside chat with the Honorable Goodwin Liu, Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court. The program will focus on Justice Liu’s career, pathway to the bench, and his work on the Portrait Project. Prior to joining the bench in 2011, Justice Liu was Professor of Law and Associate Dean at the UC Berkeley School of Law. The son of Taiwanese immigrants, Justice Liu grew up in Sacramento, California. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Stanford, a master’s degree in philosophy and physiology from Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship, and a law degree from Yale. He clerked for Judge David Tatel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the U.S. Supreme Court. He has also worked in the litigation practice of O’Melveny & Myers, served as Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, and helped launch the AmeriCorps national service program as Senior Program Officer for Higher Education at the Corporation for National Service. Justice Liu has spearheaded the Portrait Project, “A Portrait of Asian Americans in the Law,” which focuses on empirical reasons why Asian Americans are underrepresented in top leadership positions across all sectors of the legal profession. AABANY members are invited to attend the reception in person for free because AABANY is a co-sponsor of the event. Members must be logged in to register. |
| AABANY Co-Sponsors: Trial Reenactment: From "Tokyo Rose" to the China Initiative- May 30 |
When: 05/30/2024 6:00 pm - 9:00pm Where: A&O Shearman - 599 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10022 Please click here to register. In celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, A&O Shearman invites you to join us and the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) for our annual trial reenactment and panel discussion. This year’s theme delves into the persistent challenges faced by Asian community members who are often treated or perceived as “perpetual foreigners.”
Titled “From 'Tokyo Rose' to the China Initiative,” this year’s script features trials and tribulations of World War II radio broadcaster Iva Toguri d’Aquino, infamously known as "Tokyo Rose," and scientists Tsien Hsue-Shen and Wen Ho Lee, among others. These cases have ignited profound discussions about the injustices faced by Asians, often under the pretext of national security. Through their stories, we are reminded of the systemic challenges and prejudices that Asian communities have confronted throughout history. The event will be hosted by associate Rachel Lee, and will include a panel moderated by partner John Hwang. Panelists include Dr. Anming Hu, one of the individuals arrested, indicted, and acquitted under the China Initiative, Gisela Kusakawa, founding executive director of the Asian American Scholar Forum (AASF), and Chris Kwok, a distinguished arbitrator, mediator, educator, and advocate in the Asian American community.
Following the reenactment and panel discussion, networking receptions will take place in New York and Washington, D.C.
This program has been approved for two (2) credit hours in the Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias category, and is suitable for only non-transitional NY attorneys. |

| AABANY Co-Sponsors: How Can We Defeat Breast Cancer Metastasis? - June 3 |
When: 06/03/2024 - 1pm - 2pm Where: Zoom This research is focused on understanding the biology of breast cancer metastasis. Approximately a quarter of all patients diagnosed with breast cancer succumb to metastatic disease, which is still largely incurable. Markers specific for cancer cell dissemination and therapeutic targets are lacking.
JALBCA's team has developed two thematically linked markers filling this gap: Tumor Microenvironment of Metastasis (TMEM) Doorway Score and TMEM Doorway Activity-MRI (TDAM) Score. The former quantifies portals for cancer cell intravasation, showing prognostic value for metastatic risk in ER+/HER2-breast cancer. TMEM doorway score revealed racial disparity in cancer cells dissemination. The latter markers offer an MRI-based assessment of TMEM doorway activity essential for metastatic dissemination and may be used for treatment optimization. We also identified potential therapeutic targets to block TMEM doorway activity, curtailing progression of metastasis.

| AABANY LGBTQ Committee Presents: A Pride Reception - June 4 |
When: 06/04/2024 - 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Where: Goodwin Procter - New York Times Bldg, 620 8th Ave, New York, NY 10018 The LGBTQ Committee is excited to be organizing their first Pride Reception, this year courtesy of Goodwin Procter. This year's reception will feature a table reading of TAL. TAL is a reflection on the pressures Asian Americans face, often pushed towards lucrative careers by well-meaning immigrant parents, usually at the cost of their true selves. The story begins with an all-nighter at the office, and goes nightmarishly wrong when an overworked attorney is forced into a deadly game of hide-and-seek with his literal inner demon. A Korean-American story of filial piety, AAPI identity, sexual orientation and mental health. The program will be followed by a wine and beer reception. Click here to register. Registration closes on 6/2/2024 |

AABANY, in partnership with the Asian American Law Fund of New York (AALFNY), is pleased to announce the Turning the Tide (T3) Project. Following the February 10, 2021 publication of AABANY and Paul, Weiss’ report, A Rising Tide of Hate and Violence against Asian Americans in New York During COVID-19: Impact, Causes, Solutions, AABANY established an Anti-Asian Violence Task Force to advance the proposals outlined in the report and consider other solutions to address the surge of anti-Asian hate and violence in the community. The Task Force advances the T3
project, which aims to incorporate a three-pronged approach encompassing education and communication, advocacy, and research, to address anti-Asian hate and violence.
Please stand together with AABANY and AALFNY in turning
the tide against anti-Asian hate and violence. We are now accepting donations to support the T3 Project. Donations can be made to AALFNY and will be tax deductible to the extent permitted by applicable law.

In Fall 2020, AABANY launched a legal referral and information service (“LRIS”) as a public service primarily to help the general public, and especially the Asian American community. The goals of the LRIS are to provide information and referrals,
to recommend lawyers or other resources to provide competent, ethical legal advice and representation, to educate the public about legal representation and to increase respect for the legal profession.
We are seeking qualified
and experienced lawyers to serve on the panels of lawyers eligible to receive referrals from AABANY’s LRIS.
This is a vital program for AABANY that we anticipate will greatly benefit our panelists and fellow members as well
as the public, and especially the Asian American community. If you would like to apply to be considered for the LRIS panel, please contact joinlris@aabany.org, and we will send you an application
form. If you have any questions, please send them to the same address.

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective,
and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging
times, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute,
or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent
to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.
PLEASE
NOTE that the Community Response Task Force form has been updated. Even if you have already filled out the form, we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
