AABANY held its fifteenth annual Fall Conference on Saturday, October 12, and we are happy to report that it was a great success! We plan to publish a fuller recap on our blog soon, but in the meantime, we wanted to thank everyone who made it a success: All the attendees, speakers, program organizers, sponsors, and volunteers that were in attendance. Thanks also to all the employers who took part in the Diversity Career Fair, as well as the in-house counsel and law firm attorneys who participated in the Link-Up Sessions. We are especially grateful to the Center on Asian Americans and the Law at Fordham for their co-sponsorship.

We also congratulate this year's Norman Lau Kee Trailblazer Award recipient, Hugh H. Mo, honored at the Cocktail Reception in the Bateman room, following the Fall Conference. Thanks to all the event sponsors and the Fall Conference Planning Committee in ensuring the success of this event. On Wednesday, October 2nd, volunteers had the opportunity to participate in the AABANY Queens Pro Bono Clinic at the Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) Community Center in Flushing. The clinic brought together AABANY’s Pro Bono & Community Service (PBCS) Committee along with a team of dedicated volunteers to offer free legal consultations to community members facing pressing legal challenges.

The volunteers met with 19 clients addressing a variety of issues including housing, divorce, and immigration law. These are the kinds of problems that weigh heavily on people’s lives, both financially and emotionally.

Come and learn self-defense in this three-part self-defense series. Classes will be taught by David Chiang, Chief Instructor of the Wu-Tang System of Kung Fu and past Prosecutors' Committee Co-Chair. Striking, kicking, escapes from holds and grabs will be covered, in addition to general awareness and the legal ramifications of using force for self-defense or defense of others. Asian Americans have long been accused of spying for foreign countries and engaging in acts of treason. In 1949, for example, Iva Toguri D'Aquino was tried for treason in San Francisco—as the infamous "Tokyo Rose." Years later, she was pardoned.

Half a century later, Dr. Wen Ho Lee, a scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, was accused of stealing U.S. nuclear secrets for China. Although he eventually pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, the sentencing judge apologized to him on behalf of the United States.

And more recently, the U.S. Government's "China Initiative" targeted academics and scientists, bringing indictments with great fanfare, only to see many of the charges dropped, dismissed, or drastically reduced.

The Third Annual Fall Symposium of the Center on Asian Americans and the Law at Fordham Law School will explore issues presented by the Government's prosecution over the years of Asian Americans for espionage and treason. We will first examine several historic cases and follow with a panel discussion on the Government's more recent actions.

AABANY, in partnership with the Asian American Law Fund of New York (AALFNY), is pleased to announce the Turning the Tide (T3) Project. Following the February 10, 2021 publication of AABANY and Paul, Weiss’ report, A Rising Tide of Hate and Violence against Asian Americans in New York During COVID-19: Impact, Causes, Solutions, AABANY established an Anti-Asian Violence Task Force to advance the proposals outlined in the report and consider other solutions to address the surge of anti-Asian hate and violence in the community. The Task Force advances the T3 project, which aims to incorporate a three-pronged approach encompassing education and communication, advocacy, and research, to address anti-Asian hate and violence.

Please stand together with AABANY and AALFNY in turning the tide against anti-Asian hate and violence. We are now accepting donations to support the T3 Project. Donations can be made to AALFNY and will be tax deductible to the extent permitted by applicable law.

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.

The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.

PLEASE NOTE that the Community Response Task Force form has been updated. Even if you have already filled out the form, we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.

Applications are now being accepted for AABANY’s 2024 Legal Internship Program. Open to college students, law students and law grads, AABANY is looking for a few talented, energetic and motivated interns to help plan and organize AABANY programs and events, provide research and administrative assistance and perform other tasks and assignments to advance and promote AABANY’s mission. Stanford Law School invites applications for the Thomas C. Grey Fellowship. Grey Fellows teach legal writing, research, and analysis to small sections of first-year students each quarter, while writing their own scholarship in preparation for entering the market for teaching positions at law schools across the country. Over the last fifteen years, we have had a near-perfect record in placing Fellows in tenure track faculty positions.
