Founded in 2014 by two past presidents of AABANY, the Don H. Liu Scholars Program, Inc. seeks to identify, cultivate and inspire future Asian American leaders within the legal profession in order to address the single most important reality facing Asian American professionals today – the barrier to advancement. Asian Americans remain grossly underrepresented in positions of influence, leadership and power within the legal profession.
In its inaugural year, the Program awarded $15,000 each to its first two Don H. Liu Scholars and provided mentorship to ensure that each Scholar would start her career at a prominent law firm. In its second year, the Selection Committee will choose three new Scholars who possess the greatest potential to both excel in the classroom and succeed at a top law firm or Fortune 500 corporation.
Each Don H. Liu Scholar will receive:
A financial scholarship of $15,000;
Access to numerous AABANY programs;
Opportunities for summer employment and internships; and
Mentoring, guidance and support by the Scholarship Committee and others throughout his/her law school and legal careers.

The Tax Committee is pleased to host its next Peer Group Dinner Discussion. This discussion focuses on tax issues for debt investment funds. Sharon Kim (Ashurst) and Jeff Kang (Seward & Kissel) will lead the discussion, and they will address the U.S. federal income taxation of a non-U.S. person’s acquisition of debt or credit products, particularly the risks faced by debt or credit funds in being subject to the ECI regime. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about tax issues in the credit fund space. The Tax Committee will circulate reading material in advance of the event, which you are welcome (but not required to) review before our Dinner Discussion. We will also provide a high-level overview at the beginning of the discussion for those who do not specialize in this area, and there will be ample time for Q&A throughout the event.

Membership Secretary Irene Tan is seeking interested law students to serve as Membership Committee Delegates for AABANY. As a Membership Committee Delegate, law students will participate on the Membership Steering Committee and have the opportunity to work with senior leadership to develop and execute key strategic membership initiatives for the organization.
Membership Committee Delegates are required to attend a minimum of four AABANY-sponsored events in a semester where the Membership Committee Delegate will assist with checking in attendees at events, distributing marketing materials, and promoting the organization. Membership Committee Delegates will be invited to participate on other Membership projects on an ad hoc basis.
This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in getting more involved in the organization. Membership Committee Delegates will attend AABANY events for free, quickly develop an expansive network within the organization, and contribute to and collaborate on membership initiatives for one of the largest minority bar associations in New York.
