AABANY's Annual Meeting is taking place in February 2016. We hope to see you there! At our Annual Meeting, elections will be conducted to elect 7 Board Directors and 6 AABANY Officers for the coming year. The Officer positions include:

Vice President of Programs and Operations,
Vice President of Finance and Development,
Treasurer,
Recording Secretary, and Membership Secretary.
The Nominations Committee welcomes applications to fill the vacancies immediately. The Nominations Committee will select a slate of candidates to be included on a ballot form that will be sent out to the membership a month before the Annual Meeting. The Nominations Committee may also interview candidates before making its determination. The deadline to submit nominations by mail, fax, or email to nominations@aabany.org is December 11, 2015.

Come join us for a unique Group Mentoring Session led by Steve Chung (Senior Vice President of News for NBCUniversal and AABANY Director)that is focused on breaking down abstract concepts like "leadership presence," "branding," and "networking" and translating them intoconcrete, actionablestrategies that can help advance your career. To this end, the session is expected to be the first of a program series that will cover topics such as:
Establishing a presence in meetings
Becoming a better speaker
How to ask for things in a comfortable and commanding way
Avoiding common mistakes that Asians make in the workplace
How to deal with unconscious presumptions/bias
Using stereotypes to your advantage
Making a workable plan for success—how to strategize and execute
Networking in a more meaningful and natural way
The importance of style, detail and presentation
Making changes without appearing awkward, inauthentic or overly aggressive
Attendees are expected to be engaged and actively participate in discussions as well as walk away with suggested action items. Attorneys of all levels are welcomed. Food and beverages will be served.
In this reenactment of a landmark employment discrimination case, we examine the proceedings that led to the Supreme Court's decision in Wards Cove Packing Co. v. Atonio. Asian Pacific Americans have been a part of the salmon canning industry in Alaska since the late 1800s. Starting in the 1920s, Filipinos became a main work force in the Alaskan canneries where they were relegated to fish house jobs, working long hours in poor conditions for low pay. In the 1970s, led by Filipino activists, the workers organized and filed three class actions, including Wards Cove. After a lengthy trial and multiple proceedings before the Ninth Circuit, the case reached the United States Supreme Court in 1989.
This presentation is a collaboration between the New York City Bar Association and the Asian American Bar Association of New York and will feature members from both associations in the cast to tell the story of the Wards Cove workers through narration, reenactment of court proceedings, and historic photographs.
Assist tenants suffering from lack of heat or other emergency conditions draft pro se petitions against landlords for housing repairs. Volunteers will receive a brief training before assisting tenants. Bar admission and language skills not required.
AABANY SCRIE/DRIE CLINIC –
Assist elderly and disabled tenants complete applications for Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) and Disability Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE). These programs offer a lifeline to vulnerable populations who risk losing housing. Volunteers will receive a link to online training materials prior to the clinic. Bar admission and language skills are not required.

Queens Legal Services (QLS) Housing Part Petition Clinic
Assist tenants suffering from lack of heat or other emergency conditions draft pro se petitions against landlords for housing repairs. Clinics will take place on the 4th Wednesday of every other month from 6:00PM – 8:30PM. Bar admission not required. Language skills not required, but the ability to speak Spanish or other languages may be useful. To participate, contact Heejung Kook (hkook@lsny.org).

New York, New York – November 16, 2015 – Representatives from the Sonia & Celina Sotomayor High School Judicial Internship Program (“SCS HSJIP”) and The Joint Minority Bar Judicial Internship Program (“JMB JIP”) merged this Summer to form the Sonia & Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program, Inc.
The SCS HSJIP was founded in 2014 by Celina Cabán as part of her work with the Ms. JD Fellowship Program. The mission of the program is to encourage diverse high school students from underserved communities to pursue careers in the law. With the guidance of Second Circuit Judge Denny Chin and support of the Justice Resource Center, the program hosted seventeen students its first year and more than doubled in size its second year.
NEW YORK – November 18, 2015 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is proud to congratulate Christina Nguyen and Azizah Ahmad on their recent honors from the NAPABA Law Foundation (“NLF”), which were presented on November 7, 2015 at the NAPABA Rising Convention at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside in New Orleans, Louisiana. NAPABA is the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association and it established the NLF in 1994. The NLF awards scholarships on a nationwide basis to law students who demonstrate a commitment to serve or contribute to the Asian Pacific American community as future leaders. Our Immigration and Nationality Law Committee Co-Chair Rio Guerrero was recently honored by the Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League, Inc. (PACCAL) for his leadership and service in the legal profession. He was honored with many other Filipino Americans who have shown success in their fields but have made it a point to give back to the community on October 10, 2015. This past year, the Government Service Public Interest (GSPI) and Pro Bono and Community Services (PBCS) Committees have been committed to providing AABANY members a greater range of pro bono opportunities.
These committees are surveying everyone’s interest in the pro bono initiatives that they are developing, so that they can determine how to best allocate AABANY resources. Membership Secretary Irene Tan is seeking interested law students to serve as Membership Committee Delegates for AABANY. As a Membership Committee Delegate, law students will participate on the Membership Steering Committee and have the opportunity to work with senior leadership to develop and execute key strategic membership initiatives for the organization.
Membership Committee Delegates are required to attend a minimum of four AABANY-sponsored events in a semester where the Membership Committee Delegate will assist with checking in attendees at events, distributing marketing materials, and promoting the organization. Membership Committee Delegates will be invited to participate on other Membership projects on an ad hoc basis.
This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in getting more involved in the organization. Membership Committee Delegates will attend AABANY events for free, quickly develop an expansive network within the organization, and contribute to and collaborate on membership initiatives for one of the largest minority bar associations in New York.
