The New York Diversity Forum will consist of a series of sessions that will address key issues impacting traditionally unrepresented and marginalized groups and will provide a unique opportunity for cross‐cultural collaboration among community leaders. The forum has been structured to allow partnering organizations to address issues critical to their members with the goal of promoting greater understanding and enabling a constructive dialogue between community/identity interest groups, bar associations and members of the community.
The forum is being presented by the following organizations, with the support of United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York:

- National Hispanic Bar Association

AABANY's Mentorship Program and Student Outreach Committee have vacancies for co-chair positions in Fiscal Year 2017 which begins on April 1. If you are interested in applying, please send your CV or resume to main@aabany.org. Below are descriptions of the Mentorship Program and Student Outreach Committee.
AABANY’s Student Outreach Committee seeks to equip APA students with concrete skills to excel academically and professionally. In addition, the Committee acts as a bridge between law students and attorneys, encouraging APA students to be active in the APA legal community. To achieve these goals, the Committee sponsors career programs, networking events, and social activities. Currently, there are more than 300 APA law student members in AABANY, and the Committee works with approximately 18 law schools in the tri-state region.

On April 6, at Joy Luck Palace on Mott Street, the Museum of Chinese in America held its 6th Annual Celebration of Community Heroes, at which Glenn Lau-Kee, Partner, Kee & Lau-Kee, PLLC and past AABANY and NYSBA President, was honored. MOCA recognized Glenn for his immeasurable contributions “to the Chinese American community, the legal community, and the world around him. … [T]hose who know him consider Glenn’s middle name to be ‘community.’ We consider his middle name to be ‘hero.’” Read more here.

On Friday, April 7, Brooklyn Law School APALSA held its 2017 Alumni and Friends Dinner at the Forchelli Center at Brooklyn Law School. The gathering brought together nearly 100 law students, alumni and friends. AABANY leaders Chris Kwok, Issues Committee Co-Chair, Francis Chin (who is an administrator at Brooklyn Law School), Professional Development Committee Chair, and Executive Director Yang Chen joined in the celebration. Also present were KALAGNY President Bridgette Ahn and past FALA (Filipino American Lawyers Association)-New York President Rio Guerrero. Read more here.

Congratulations to Calvin Woo, AABANY member, Partner at Verrill Dana, who recently joined the Connecticut Bar Foundation Board of Directors! From the firm's official press release:
WESTPORT, Conn. (April 7, 2017) – Verrill Dana partner Calvin Woo has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Bar Foundation, a non-profit organization that works to ensure equal access to legal services for all, regardless of power or resources.
With more than 15 years of experience, Woo focuses his law practice on commercial and employment litigation, and white collar criminal defense matters. He serves on Verrill Dana’s Diversity Committee and on the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Asian Pacific American Bar Association, where he previously served as president. Woo is also a member of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association’s Partners Committee and Government Enforcement and Compliance Committee.

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.
Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.
Willing to fill out paperwork for paid fellowships, if necessary. Rolling deadline. Opportunities open year round.
