On Saturday, September 23, we'll be taking charge and leading change at Fordham Law School. The AABANY Fall Conference is a full day of CLEs, career panels, mentoring, and fun -- the perfect opportunity for anyone looking to fulfill their CLE requirements, move their career forward, or connect with new and old friends. We hope to see you there.
From now until June 30, 2017, we are accepting program submissions for the Fall Conference. If you have an idea that you're passionate about and would like to turn it into an educational experience for others, we encourage you to submit a program proposal. To do so, please contact the appropriate Committee Chair and let them know that you're interested. All Committee Chairs have the submission forms and can help you with your next steps. AABANY's Government Service & Public Interest Committee and Pro Bono & Community Service Committee are proud to co-host a special pro bono project serving the needs of disadvantaged students in the New York City public school system. Experts from Legal Services NYC will teach pro bono attorneys how to represent low and moderate income Asian American parents of children with disabilities as they fight to obtain fair education for their children in NYC public schools.
More about the project:
The clients. Low and moderate income Asian American parents of children with disabilities who are trying to obtain a fair education for their children in NYC public schools
The problem. New York City frequently refuses to provide disabled children with an adequate education, in contravention of federal and state law. Without legal assistance, parents often feel powerless to challenge a school district’s denial of special education services. Many parents are unaware of what rights their children are entitled to, or how to pursue relief. These issues are further compounded in Asian American and other immigrant communities where language and cultural barriers can make access to these services harder to obtain.
The solution. Legal advice and representation at special education hearings makes a tremendous difference in the outcomes of these cases. With legal services organizations chronically underfunded, pro bono attorneys play an outsized role in securing justice for these families.
The project. LSNYC will partner with Asian American affinity groups in law firms and volunteers to represent parents at special education hearings and/or provide advice and counsel.
Volunteer support. LSNYC will provide thorough training and a volunteer manual, along with mentorship and oversight on cases.

On Friday, June 16, AABANY participated in the 2017 Trivia Bowl organized by the Asian American Journalists Association of New York., held at Broad Street Ballroom. AABANY has fielded a team each year since the inception (except for one year due to a scheduling conflict). AABANY was hopeful of repeating their first place finish last year, but it was a tough Trivia Bowl this year with challenging questions that managed to stump our team of trivia buffs. Through five rounds covering various categories (such as New York, Current Events and Fake News), our team hovered around second and third place, ultimately finishing in fifth. Our team was disappointed, but we congratulate Newsday for winning this year’s Trivia Bowl.
We thank our team members: Tsui Yee, Gabriel Arce-Yee, Gary Malone, Louis Villella, Nelson Mar, Kevin Hsi, Steven Shapiro, Lia Tieu, Yang Chen, and Chris Kwok (Team Captain).
We also thank the following judges who kindly agreed to give up their Friday night to serve as judges at the Trivia Bowl: Hon. Charles Liu, Hon. Laurie Lau, Hon. Alex Tisch, Hon. Toko Serita, Hon. Margaret Chan, and Hon. Gerald Leibovitz.
Although Team AABANY did not manage to repeat last year’s victory, team member Lia Tieu did score a great raffle prize: a basket of high-end cosmetics and skin care products from AmorePacific, with a retail value of $1250, all for just a $20 raffle ticket. Congrats, Lia!

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.
Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.
Willing to fill out paperwork for paid fellowships, if necessary. Rolling deadline. Opportunities open year round.
