Our mentorship program provides support, advice, and networking opportunities to aid both mentors and mentees in their professional and personal development. By way of one-to-one relationships and Mentorship Program events held throughout the year, the program will provide the structure to advance professional growth and networking skills of both mentors and mentees. Mentors and mentees will be AABANY members and may come from any level of experience and practice area.

Do you know how to distinguish yourself to employers? Do you struggle at meeting with people at events?

AABANY’s Student Outreach Committee and Cardozo APALSA are proud to host a workshop led by a legal headhunter and a networking expert giving advice on how law students can improve their candidacy for jobs and breaking down the ins and outs of networking. This workshop will be interactive and engage students in controlled scenarios to help build skills and comfort with networking.

Congratulations to Kin Ng

Congratulations to Kin Ng, AABANY member and co-founder of the AABANY Prosecutors’ Committee, for his work at the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office prosecuting scammers who had run off with the life savings of an elderly Chinese immigrant, mentioned in the New Yorker article you can read here

Fraud that exploits the religious and spiritual beliefs of immigrant communities continues to be a pervasive problem in Chinatowns around New York and the world. Please join AABANY in thanking Kin Ng for helping to protect those in the Chinese-American community who are vulnerable.

Volunteers Needed to Defend Asian American Voting Rights

2017 Asian American Election Protection – Tuesday, November 7, 2017, MA • NJ • NY • VA

In past elections, Asian Americans have faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote, including segregated “Asian” voting lines.  When the news media reported on election results, Asian Americans were overlooked.  In response, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) conducts a non-partisan survey of Asian American voters to document voting patterns and instances of voter disenfranchisement. AALDEF has also monitored the elections for compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act, which mandates bilingual ballots and forbids anti-Asian voter discrimination.

AABANY is partnering with AALDEF on this important initiative. To find out how you can help protect the voting rights of Asian Americans, read more here.

AABANY Testifies in Support of Korematsu Day

On Oct. 25, 2017, the New York City Council’s Committee on Cultural Affairs, Libraries and International Intergroup Relations, Chaired by Council Member James Van Bramer, held a hearing on Res. No. 792 to name January 30 annually as Fred T. Korematsu Day in New York City. The legislation was introduced by Council Member Daniel Dromm and is co-sponsored by 34 other Council Members.

The hearing was attended by many supporters of the legislation and kicked off with testimony from Fred Korematsu’s daughter, Karen Korematsu, Founder and Executive Director of the Korematsu Institute, who called in from the West Coast. Also, testifying by phone from the West Coast was Lori Bannai, one of the attorneys who fought successfully to overturn Korematsu’s conviction through a coram nobis lawsuit brought in the 1980s, four decades after Korematsu’s conviction for violating Executive Order 9066 was upheld by the United States Supreme Court.

AABANY was privileged and honored to offer testimony in support of the legislation.

AABANY Law School Group Membership Rate

To encourage large groups of law students to join AABANY, AABANY is offering the following group rate until October 31 for new members only:

$150 for a minimum group of 20
For groups larger than 20, add $50 per group of 5 students (e.g., if your group is 24, the cost would be $200; if your group is 33, the cost is $250)

This offer represents significant savings over the individual student rate of $15 per year. At $150 for a group of 20, the per person rate works out to $7.50 per student, a 50% discount.

APALSA leaders, please encourage your members to come together and take advantage of this group discount. APALSA members, tell your leaders to jump on this deal. We ask for one payment from each APALSA with a list of email addresses for the members, and we can get them signed up from there.

The Criminal Justice Act Committee of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York is soliciting applications from experienced criminal defense attorneys for membership on the CJA Panel for the District. Join the AABANY Community Response Task Force

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force!

The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.

The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.
