AABANY turned out in force again at the 2018 NAPABA National Convention in Chicago, from Nov. 8-11. AABANY was well-represented in various panels, including our renowned Trial Re-enactment. This year we performed “Alice in Chinatown: Chol Soo Lee and His Fight for Freedom,” about a Korean American man wrongly accused of a gangland murder in 1970s San Francisco.
Congratulations also to Best Under 40 honoree Marianne Chow Newman and Trailblazer Award recipient Joon Kim. Congratulations to Arnold & Porter for receiving the Law Firm Diversity Award. Past AABANY President Susan L. Shin accepted the award on behalf of the firm.
AABANY looks forward to hosting the NAPABA Northeast Regional Conference in 2019. Stay tuned for those details.

AABANY congratulates the AABANY members who have been named Top Super Lawyers and Rising Stars in the New York Metro 2018 edition.
Both recognitions of Super Lawyer and Rising Star involve a very selective and intense process in which the selected attorney is nominated and approved by his or her peers in the same area of practice.
Selections are made on an annual basis. Only 5% of attorneys are recognized as Super Lawyers, and only 2.5% of attorneys under 40 years of age are selected as Rising Stars. The attorney must prove to be ethical, have excellent client records and proven results. The 2018 digital edition of Super Lawyer and Rising Star can be found by following the link in the title.
Congratulations to you all on your efforts and achievements!

Applications may now be submitted for the 2019 Don H. Liu Scholars Program. The Program was founded in 2014 by two past presidents of the Asian American Bar Association of New York. The Program seeks to identify and cultivate future Asian American leaders in the legal community to address the single most important reality facing Asian American professionals today – the barrier to advancement.
This year, the Selection Committee will select up to 3 scholars. Each scholar will be awarded $15,000 and have access to prominent mentors, including Don H. Liu, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of Target Corporation. Additionally, scholars will have assistance in securing summer internships. Details and more information about the Program can be found here: http://www.donhliuscholars.org/ and on the Don H. Liu Scholars Program 2017 Annual Report.
Application materials are due on November 23, 2018.

AABANY’s Student Outreach Committee is excited to launch a group membership rate for law students at local Asian Pacific American Law Student Associations (APALSAs). For a group rate of $150, AABANY will offer up to 20 APALSA members free one-year memberships. This group rate covers all AABANY events, including CLE and non-CLE programs, networking events, AABANY’s Mentorship Program and AABANY’s Annual Fall Conference.
Please note that the current group rate covers up to 20 law students per law school. If the APALSA will have more than 20 participants, please reach out to Student Outreach Committee Co-Chair Edwin Kim (edwin.kim@aabany.org) to discuss pricing options for groups larger than 20.
This group rate represents a huge discount given that the regular rate for law students is $15 per person. For APALSA members who are already dues-paying members, participation in this group rate will extend current memberships by another year. If you are a member of an APALSA at a New York area law school and interested in participating, please have one representative from your APALSA reach out to Edwin Kim (edwin.kim@aabany.org) for further instructions.
This law student group rate offer will remain in effect until Monday, Dec. 3.

| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.
