Spring is in the air, so the 40th Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Festival is right around the corner!
On Sunday, May 19, 2019, the fair will be held on Mott St. (south of Canal). This year's theme will be Honoring Asian Pacific American heroes. AABANY is a long time supporter of the AAPIH (also known as the CAPA) Festival and we will have a table there. Come and support our efforts by volunteering to spend time at the table and getting the word out on AABANY's community efforts, like our Pro Bono Clinic!

On Sunday, April 28, AABANY co-sponsored the annual Asian Pacific American Women’s Conference at Pace University. Hosted by the Organization of Chinese Advocates and Families with Children from China, the Conference was a full day of fruitful panel discussions that revolved around the sociopolitical issues that affect the Asian Pacific American woman–from #MeToo to mental health. As part of the conference, AABANY hosted a pro bono clinic and the following members gave community presentations on their areas of practice:

A recent Law360 article entitled “Why Are Law Clerks So White” reported:
Take any five federal law clerks, and at least four of them would probably be white. And nobody can be certain why.
California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu has some guesses about the reasons black, Asian and Latino lawyers are largely shut out of these prestigious positions that can turbocharge a lawyer’s early career. But he says it’s impossible to pinpoint reasons or patterns because so little data exists.
“We actually don’t even know the most basic things about those opportunities,” Justice Liu told Law360. “It would be interesting if we could know even basic things, like do women judges get more women clerks? We have impressions of that, but we don’t know with any precision whether these things are true.”
The article went on to talk about how Justice Liu plans to address these questions in Portrait Project 2.0. AABANY is supporting this research as a Silver Sponsor. | AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.
Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.
