Parkin Lee to be Honored with Norman Lau Kee Trailblazer Award at NAPABA Northeast Regional/Fall Conference

The Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) is proud to announce that Parkin Lee, Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, Rockefeller Group, will be the recipient of the Norman Lau Kee Trailblazer Award at AABANY’s Tenth Annual Fall Conference on September 21, 2019, to be held at the Fordham University School of Law.

Named for Norman Lau Kee, a revered legal and community pillar of New York City’s Chinatown for decades, the Trailblazer Award honors an accomplished leader in the legal profession who is of Asian Pacific American (APA) descent or has demonstrated dedication to APA issues in the community. This award honors an individual who has carved a path for others to follow, served the community as a mentor and role model, and has made a lasting impact on the APA community through his or her dedication and commitment.

In 2008, Parkin Lee became the first APA Chief Legal Officer of the Rockefeller Group.  The Rockefeller Group, for more than 90 years, has been a leading developer, owner and operator of commercial real estate, including the iconic Rockefeller Center in New York City, with an eye towards not only economic value but of civic value as well.  As the Chief Legal Officer, and the final authority on legal matters, Parkin mentors, teaches, guides and shares his insight whenever he can. He led the legal team in the acquisition of majority stakes in TA Realty and Europa Capital, real estate investment management platforms based in Boston and London, respectively, with over $15 billion of AUM, and in the successful launch of the Rockefeller Group’s first US real estate private equity fund.

2019 NAPABA Northeast Regional/AABANY Fall Conference: Professional Development Coaching

AABANY is continuing its Professional Development Coaching program at this year's NE Regional/Fall Conference, and our focus this year will be on Developing the Ability to Influence Others. PDC Sessions are a safe space where participants can seek and receive honest feedback on “blind spots” that may be inhibiting their career advancement. This skill is an important one to cultivate at any stage of one’s career, whether you are a junior attorney seeking to be staffed on a certain matter, a seasoned attorney with your eye on partnership or the c-suite, or in transition planning your next career move. To this end, participants should be prepared to discuss (1) whom they want to influence, (2) under what scenario(s) do they want to influence this person, and (3) how they plan to influence this person. Please note that this is a one-time session and there is no expectation of an ongoing coaching or mentoring relationship.

For more details and to sign up, please see https://conference2019.aabany.org/professional-development-coaching/

Please note that the deadline to register for these sessions is September 6

2019 NAPABA Northeast Regional/AABANY Fall Conference: Diversity Career Fair & Expo

AABANY’s Career Placement Committee is hosting its Annual Diversity Career Fair & Expo at the 2019 NE Regional/Fall Conference from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The Diversity Career Fair & Expo will feature selected public sector, corporate sector, and law firm employers who will host informational sessions, meet and greet interested applicants, and/or conduct first round on-site interviews. In addition, attendees can meet members of AABANY’s Career Placement Committee and receive career advice, as well as learn more about other job openings.

Please see https://conference2019.aabany.org/diversity-career-fair-expo/ for the list of participants this year and the submission form. The deadline to complete the Intake Form and to submit resumes, applications for resume collection or for on-site interviews is September 14, 2019.

Highlight: IP Committee Dinner, August 28

On August 28, 2019, IP Committee members gathered for a Filipino dinner at Mama Fina’s House of Filipino Sisig.

A mix of old and new members attended.  Some were just learning about IP, while others had years of experience in the industry.  We dined on delicious dishes such as pork sisig, crispy pata, and kare-kare as we networked.

We also previewed the IP Committee’s upcoming AABANY Fall Conference panel: Far From Home: Cultural and Legal Considerations When Bringing Your Brand To New Territories.

Join AABANY to Support Portrait Project 2.0

A recent Law360 article entitled “Why Are Law Clerks So White” reported:

Take any five federal law clerks, and at least four of them would probably be white. And nobody can be certain why.

California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu has some guesses about the reasons black, Asian and Latino lawyers are largely shut out of these prestigious positions that can turbocharge a lawyer’s early career. But he says it’s impossible to pinpoint reasons or patterns because so little data exists.

“We actually don’t even know the most basic things about those opportunities,” Justice Liu told Law360. “It would be interesting if we could know even basic things, like do women judges get more women clerks? We have impressions of that, but we don’t know with any precision whether these things are true.”

The article went on to talk about how Justice Liu plans to address these questions in Portrait Project 2.0. AABANY is supporting this research as a Silver Sponsor. AABANY challenges its members to donate to Portrait Project 2.0. AABANY will match member donations up to $5,000. Join AABANY in advancing the work of Portrait Project 2.0. Join the AABANY Community Response Task Force

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.

The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.
