We plan to celebrate the 30th anniversary of AABANY’s founding at the NAPABA National Convetion in Austin, Texas, in November. We also announced at the Northeast Regional/Fall Conference that AABANY will be receiving the Affiliate of the Year Award at the convention. We now have another great reason to celebrate, so we hope all AABANY members are making plans to join us in Austin in November. To facilitate communicating with each other in Austin, Membership Director Beatrice Leong has started a WhatsApp group, and to join it, we ask that you email us your name and phone number, so that we can get you added to the WhatsApp group. Send the email to main@aabany.org and we will pass along the information to Beatrice. Hope to you can come celebrate with us in Austin!

Every year NAPABA at its national convention, strives to bring to the forefront vital issues of importance to the Asian Pacific American legal community. This year, NAPABA will feature two luncheon plenaries, a reenactment of Fred Korematsu’s fight for justice, and a panel discussion on the current issues facing the LGBTQ community in light of the ongoing debates in Texas and before the Supreme Court. Join us at the 2019 NAPABA Convention in Austin, TX as we explore these issues and many more.
AABANY is excited to announce that it will be presenting the lunch plenary session at the NAPABA Convention titled "Fred Korematsu’s Fight for Justice: A Reenactment of Korematsu v. United States" on Friday, November 8, 2019.
AABANY is also excited to announce that Glenn Magpantay, AABANY LGBT Committee Co-Chair, is slated as a speaker at the lunch plenary session titled "Beyond Marriage Equality: The Next Stage of Inclusion" on Saturday, November 9, 2019.

On Thursday, Oct. 17, at the 40th anniversary gala for Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) Brooklyn Community Services, held at Affable Eatery in Brooklyn, Pro Bono Committee Co-Chair Karen Yau was honored for her work in support of the community. Many AABANY members and leaders came out to celebrate with Karen, including Pro Bono Committee Co-Chairs Pauline Yeung-Ha and Asako Aiba, Government Service and Public Interest Committee Co-Chair Kevin Hsi, AABANY Director of Technology and Professional Development Committee Co-Chair Francis Chin and Executive Director Yang Chen. October’s Monthly Pro Bono Clinic, held on Wednesday, October 9 at 33 Bowery Street in Confucius Plaza, brought out 30 volunteers who volunteered their time to help 41 clients.In a few short years, with the tireless and generous assistance of our volunteers, we have helped hundreds of low-income clients with free legal advice and referrals to high-quality, culturally sensitive, and linguistically competent legal services. Together we have helped expand access to justice for underserved Asian American New Yorkers. AABANY’s Monthly Pro Bono Clinic occurs every second Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. AABANY's Pro Bono & Community Service Committee will conduct its 2nd Legal Advice & Referral Pro Bono Clinic in Brooklyn, NY on Thursday, November 21, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The clinic will be held at A+ Academy, 6802 8th Ave, Brooklyn, New York 11220.
Since the inauguration of AABANY's monthly pro bono clinic in 2015, hundreds of low-income community members have received thoughtful advice and appropriate legal referrals from AABANY members.
The Pro Bono Committee is seeking volunteer attorneys and language interpreters for the Pro Bono Clinic in Brooklyn. Attorney volunteers do not need to be specialists or have expertise in a specific area of law, but should have experience in client intake and consultation. Attorney volunteers will only be rendering legal advice and will not take on any legal representation. All attorney volunteers must be AABANY members for professional liability coverage purposes. Volunteers may sign up here to become an AABANY member or can do so at the Pro Bono Clinic. Interpreter volunteers should be fluent in English and at least one of the following languages: Cantonese Chinese, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, or other Asian languages or dialects.
Volunteers - attorneys and interpreters - should bring open ears, patience, and compassion. All volunteers should arrive by 5:45 PM and will be given an orientation before the start of the clinic. Attorneys and interpreters interested in volunteering for the Pro Bono Clinic, and those who need certifications of pro bono hours for bar admission purposes, should contact Asako.Aiba@aabany.org.

AABANY is proud to announce that applications for the Don H. Liu Scholars Program are now open. The Program was founded in 2014 by two past presidents of AABANY. The Program seeks to identify and cultivate future Asian American leaders in the legal community to address the single most important reality facing Asian American professionals today: the barrier to advancement. This year, the Selection Committee will select up to three scholars. Each scholar will be awarded $15,000 each and have access to prominent mentors, including Don H. Liu, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal and Risk Officer of Target Corporation. The Program will also provide assistance in career development, including identifying potential internships.

| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.

Judge seeks volunteer attorneys/law grads with experience in criminal, landlord-tenant or consumer debt matters. Judge presides on appellate cases and also handles some civil Supreme Court matters.
Full-time or four days per week preferred, but flexible schedule can be arranged. A wonderful learning and mentee opportunity, as well as an excellent resume-enhancer. Although not guaranteed, many of former volunteers have moved onto paying legal positions. Opportunity to enhance research/writing and oral skills.
