Glenn D. Magpantay, a long-time civil rights attorney, advocate, and leader for Asian Pacific American (APA) and LGBTQ rights, is a 2020 recipient of the Daniel K. Inouye Trailblazer Award, NAPABA’s highest honor. Each year, outstanding
lawyers are awarded for their exceptional leadership in paving the way for the advancement of other APA attorneys and creating lasting, substantial contributions in the broader APA community.
Glenn’s inspiring commitment to
public service and activism started in college and continued after graduation when he was a lobbyist for higher education in the early 1990s. As one of the few Asian people working in the State Capitols at the time, Glenn learned the
importance of APA and LGBTQ representation in law.

The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is proud to announce that applications for the Don H. Liu Scholars Program (“DHL Program”) are now open. The DHL Program was founded in 2014 by two past presidents of AABANY and
seeks to identify and cultivate future Asian American leaders in the legal community to address the single most important reality facing Asian American professionals today: the barrier to advancement.
This year, the Selection
Committee will select up to three scholars. Each scholar will be awarded $15,000 and will have access to prominent mentors, including Don H. Liu, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal and Risk Officer of Target Corporation. The DHL
Program will also provide assistance in OCI (on campus interview) bidding strategy, professional and soft-skills development and networking opportunities, including identifying potential internships. Details and more information about
the DHL Program can be found at http://www.donhliuscholars.org/.
To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must (i) be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of Asian descent;
(ii) be enrolled full-time as a 1L in a J.D. program at an ABA-accredited and approved law school in the U.S.; (iii) demonstrate exceptional academic accomplishments and leadership; (iv) demonstrate financial need; and (v) intend to
practice in the private sector in the New York City metropolitan area following graduation. For more details on the application process and eligibility requirements, please find the application package here: http://www.donhliuscholars.org/application/.
Application materials are due by 11:59pm (Eastern Standard Time), December 31, 2020.

This fall, AABANY is launching a legal referral and information service (“LRIS”) as a public service primarily to help the general public, and especially the Asian American community. The goals of the LRIS are to provide information and
referrals, to recommend lawyers or other resources to provide competent, ethical legal advice and representation, to educate the public about legal representation and to increase respect for the legal profession.
We are seeking
qualified and experienced lawyers to serve on the panels of lawyers eligible to receive referrals from AABANY’s LRIS. Our current plan is to start the program on October 1st or as soon thereafter as possible.
This is a vital
program for AABANY that we anticipate will greatly benefit our panelists and fellow members as well as the public, and especially the Asian American community. If you would like to apply to be considered for the LRIS panel, please
contact main@aabany.org and we will send you an application form. If you have any questions, please send them to the same address.
We hope you can join us in the launch of this important
new AABANY initiative.

Due to high demand, the AABANY Mentorship Program is in need of additional mentors! Please consider joining as a mentor—you can make a meaningful difference in the career of a more junior attorney. Even junior associates (with at least
one year of experience) are eligible to serve as mentors, as many of our mentees are law students seeking advice on the transition from student life to professional life. Our mentors find the AABANY Mentorship Program to be highly
gratifying, and many take on more than one mentee. The minimum time commitment is only one meeting with each mentee per quarter. Please consider joining today!
To learn more about the program, go to https://www.aabany.org/?page=944
If you are interested in helping us as a Mentor, contact Shruti Chopra at shrutichopra14@gmail.com or Joseph Eng at jeng@kslaw.com, Co-Chairs of the
Mentorship Program.

The COVID-19 era has brought more challenges to our Asian American community in New York, with anti-Asian violence on the rise and many New Yorkers facing serious legal issues in housing and immigration, as well as challenges due to economic
hardships. Our Pro Bono Clinic has gone remote to provide legal information and assistance.
To raise funds for our Pro Bono Clinic,
AABANY member Joane Siyan Wong has created a "One Humanity Against the Virus" button. Buy one for $10 or two for $15 at
https://www.aabany.org/store/ListProducts.aspx?catid=797146
Please show your support by buying one, two or a dozen buttons. Help spread the message of unity, fight anti-Asian violence and harassment, and support the efforts of the Pro Bono Clinic. Thank you!

On October 30, 2020, the Membership Committee hosted their weekly virtual Membership Mixer, with 20 participants in attendance. This week AABANY held a costume contest. The icebreaker question this week was: “What was the most memorable
trick someone played on you or that you played on someone else, or what was your happiest Halloween Memory?” Participants told us their favorite memories, including people watching their children trick or treat. One person was pranked
in college when their friend took an extra bed, moved it into their dorm room, and created an official looking letter to notify them that they were getting a 3rd roommate.
For the costume contest, members dressed up as a moose,
a scary clown, Elliot from Mr. Robot, a Zombie, Princess Leia, and Killer Hornet! Congratulations to Momo Liu for her Princess Leia Costume and Kasama Star for her “Butt Cream” Zombie — the votes were tied! What is a “Butt Cream”Zombie?
Let’s just say you had to be there. The Membership Committee previously hosted Monthly Mixers at bars, ballparks, stadiums, operas, etc, but due to COVID,
we have moved online to offer members a weekly outlet to share their feelings, see old friends, and make new connections. Mixers start at 6:30pm on Friday and the main event ends at 7:30pm but people stay on after 7:30pm for smaller
breakout groups.
Membership Committee will continue to host weekly virtual mixers until it is safe to gather together again in person.
We are giving away door prizes in some weeks. In order to win, you must be a member
and must RSVP on the aabany.org calendar entry to get a raffle number. Non-members can join the mixer but won’t be eligible to win a prize.
Sign up by Thursday, Nov. 5 for this week’s mixer at https://www.aabany.org/events/event_details.asp?legacy=1&id=1420336.

| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and
coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times,
we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize
a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.
PLEASE NOTE that the Community Response Task Force form has been updated. Even if you have already filled out the form, we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
