On November 13, 2020, the Membership Committee hosted their weekly virtual Membership Mixer, with 17 participants in attendance. This week AABANY had the honor of having Naf Kwun, Partner at Lee Anav Chung White Kim Ruger & Richter LLP and AABANY Board Member, as our guest speaker.
The icebreaker question posed to the group was: “What would you have done differently if you knew everything you knew about COVID before the lockdown?” Participants gave varied responses, such as invest in Pfizer, Zoom, and Amazon stocks; take a trip; clean their offices; buy more PPE.
Naf shared her path to success in the legal profession, starting with her attending AABANY’s second Fall Conference, in 2011, which led her to getting actively involved with AABANY’s quarterly newsletter, The Advocate, which then led to her becoming active on various AABANY Committees, including serving as a Co-Chair of the Women’s Committee. Naf also joined the Board and served as an Office and Director, including a highly productive tenure as Co-Vice President of Programs and Operations. Even as she was busy with AABANY, Naf got her legal career on track, first as a clerk to Criminal Court Justice Patricia DiMango, and then as an Associate at Lee Anav, where she rose to Partner after a few years. Naf also serves on the Board of AABANY’s 501(c)(3) affiliate, the Asian American Law Fund of New York. This year, Naf received recognition as one of NAPABA’s Best Under 40. Congratulations to Naf on this well-deserved honor and recognition, and thanks to Naf for sharing her inspiring journey with our members at our Weekly Mixer!
The Membership Committee previously hosted Monthly Mixers at bars, ballparks, stadiums, operas, etc, but due to COVID, we have moved online to offer members a weekly outlet to share their feelings, see old friends, and make new connections. Mixers start at 6:30pm on Friday and the main event ends at 7:30pm but many often stay on after 7:30pm for smaller breakout groups. Membership Committee will continue to host weekly virtual mixers until it is safe to gather together again in person.
We are giving away door prizes in some weeks. In order to win, you must be a member and must RSVP on the aabany.org calendar entry to get a raffle number. Non-members can join the mixer but won’t be eligible to win a prize.
Congratulations to Henry Man, for winning the weekly prize!
Please join us on November 20, 2020 for a Remo Room Mixer. Register by Thursday, Nov. 19, at https://www.aabany.org/events/event_details.asp?legacy=1&id=1420338. |

The panel will discuss the issues and challenges related to legal departments and law firms pivoting to remote working arrangements, and the implications for the future in-house and outside legal services. The panel will address the challenges
they are facing by working remotely, how they ensure continuity and quality in supporting internal and external clients and customers, how they are managing staff remotely, how they are staying involved and informed to ensure they
are identifying issues without the benefit of having all parties in one room, the expectations of in-house teams from their outside counsel, and best practices that have been put in place. The panel will also address the adoption of
legal technology as the need to be agile and cost effective in turning around volumes of work increases, how the current crisis has impacted legal operations and identified a need to use technology and tools more – whether it be collaboration
tools, contract management tools or tools to monitor and manage the work of staff working remotely, and the re-imagining of law departments and firms now and in the future.
Register here by the Nov. 17 deadline. Zoom codes will be sent to all registrants on the morning of Nov. 18.

The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is proud to announce that applications for the Don H. Liu Scholars Program (“DHL Program”) are now open. The DHL Program was founded in 2014 by two past presidents of AABANY and
seeks to identify and cultivate future Asian American leaders in the legal community to address the single most important reality facing Asian American professionals today: the barrier to advancement.
This year, the Selection
Committee will select up to three scholars. Each scholar will be awarded $15,000 and will have access to prominent mentors, including Don H. Liu, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal and Risk Officer of Target Corporation. The DHL
Program will also provide assistance in OCI (on campus interview) bidding strategy, professional and soft-skills development and networking opportunities, including identifying potential internships. Details and more information about
the DHL Program can be found at http://www.donhliuscholars.org/.
To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must (i) be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of Asian descent;
(ii) be enrolled full-time as a 1L in a J.D. program at an ABA-accredited and approved law school in the U.S.; (iii) demonstrate exceptional academic accomplishments and leadership; (iv) demonstrate financial need; and (v) intend to
practice in the private sector in the New York City metropolitan area following graduation. For more details on the application process and eligibility requirements, please find the application package here: http://www.donhliuscholars.org/application/.
Application materials are due by 11:59pm (Eastern Standard Time), December 31, 2020.

This fall, AABANY is launching a legal referral and information service (“LRIS”) as a public service primarily to help the general public, and especially the Asian American community. The goals of the LRIS are to provide information and
referrals, to recommend lawyers or other resources to provide competent, ethical legal advice and representation, to educate the public about legal representation and to increase respect for the legal profession.
We are seeking
qualified and experienced lawyers to serve on the panels of lawyers eligible to receive referrals from AABANY’s LRIS. Our current plan is to start the program on October 1st or as soon thereafter as possible.
This is a vital
program for AABANY that we anticipate will greatly benefit our panelists and fellow members as well as the public, and especially the Asian American community. If you would like to apply to be considered for the LRIS panel, please
contact main@aabany.org and we will send you an application form. If you have any questions, please send them to the same address.
We hope you can join us in the launch of this important
new AABANY initiative.

| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and
coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times,
we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize
a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.
PLEASE NOTE that the Community Response Task Force form has been updated. Even if you have already filled out the form, we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
