This December, the 2020 Annual National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (“NAPABA”) Awards Ceremony will be held virtually to honor outstanding attorneys and organizations that have made an impact within the Asian Pacific American
community. Among those being honored will be Naf Kwun, a partner at Lee Anav Chung White Kim Ruger & Richter LLP and a valued member of AABANY’s Board of Directors, who has received one of NAPABA’s Best Under 40 awards. Every year,
NAPABA recognizes talented individuals within the Asian Pacific American (“APA”) legal community under the age of forty who have achieved prominence and distinction in their fields of endeavor. Recipients are selected on the basis
of two factors: first, demonstrated success and professionalism in the practice of law; and second, a commitment to the APA community. A law firm partner, mother to two young kids, and wife, Naf has not only taken an exceptional career
path but has also shown a continuous and inspiring dedication to the APA community.

Former AABANY Board Member, Kevin D. Kim, is currently volunteering as the Campaign Finance Chair for NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer’s Campaign for Mayor of NYC. Kevin’s experience in serving on nonprofit boards is extensive – today, he
serves on the Board of Trustees for the City University of New York (CUNY) and was elected this fall to the national Board of Directors for the Stanford Asian Pacific American Alumni Club (SAPAAC). His past board service includes the
American Red Cross in Queens, Friends of Thirteen (public media provider featuring PBS series), Korean American Community Foundation (KACF), Korean American Association of Greater New York (KAAGNY). In recognition for his tireless
community service work, the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) awarded Kevin with an Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2015 and in 2020, Columbia Law School’s APALSA presented Kevin with its Hong Yen Chang Award for inspiring
civic engagement.

Last week we announced that AABANY reached -- and exceeded -- a historic milestone of 1,500 paid memberships. As we approach the Thanksgiving Holiday, we once again express our profound gratitude for all the members, new and renewed, who helped
us to achieve this membership goal. During the "1500 in 2020" campaign, we asked individuals and AABANY's Committees to help us sign up members, and many stepped up to the challenge. We are happy to announce the winners.
The
individual prize goes to Will Lee, Student Outreach Committee Vice Chair, and the Committee prize goes to the Student Outreach Committee (SOC). Will worked closely with the SOC over the course of the last few months to actively engage
APALSA members from New York City and beyond, organized numerous law school roadshows and participated in them to promote AABANY and make the case for law students to join and get involved with AABANY. Their combined efforts accounted
for some 250 members that helped to push AABANY over the top in its quest to sign up 1500 members. Thank you, Will and SOC!

On November 20, 2020, 16 participants attended our Weekly Mixer on Remo. This week we celebrated the birthday of Board Member Francis Chin, Director of Technology! His friends dropped in to wish him a happy birthday from California, Kansas,
and Japan! His birthday wish is to eat at a buffet safely, without COVID restrictions. We played “Happy Birthday” for him throughout the night. Participants stayed until 8:45pm.
The Membership Committee previously hosted Monthly
Mixers at bars, ballparks, stadiums, operas, etc, but due to COVID, we have moved online to offer members a weekly outlet to share their feelings, see old friends, and make new connections. Mixers start at 6:30pm on Friday and the
main event ends at 7:30pm but many often stay on after 7:30pm for smaller breakout groups.
Membership Committee will continue to host weekly virtual mixers until it is safe to gather together again in person.
We are giving
away door prizes at some of the mixers. In order to win, you must be a member and must RSVP on the aabany.org calendar entry to get a raffle number. Non-members can join the mixer but won’t be eligible to win a prize.

AABANY's Annual Meeting is taking place on Feb. 9, 2021. We hope to see you there! At our Annual Meeting, elections will be conducted to elect several Board Directors and 7 AABANY Officers for the coming year. The Officer positions include:
President-Elect,
Vice
President of Programs and Operations - 2 Positions,
Director of Development,
Treasurer,
Secretary, and
Membership Director.
The Nominations Committee welcomes applications to fill the vacancies immediately. The Nominations
Committee will select a slate of candidates to be included on a ballot form that will be sent out to the membership a month before the Annual Meeting. The Nominations Committee plans to interview candidates during the week of December
14.

On Thursday, November 12, 2020, AABANY’s Student Outreach Committee (“SOC”) together with NYU APALSA as co-sponsor were thrilled to host over 110 attendees in its annual resume review workshop on the virtual platform, Remo. The event
was particularly exciting this year because we invited APALSAs locally and outside of New York. We were pleased to see students join us from different states representing fifteen APALSAs who got to meet numerous attorneys in diverse
sectors ranging from law firms to General Counsels of public companies. Read more here.

The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is proud to announce that applications for the Don H. Liu Scholars Program (“DHL Program”) are now open. The DHL Program was founded in 2014 by two past presidents of AABANY and
seeks to identify and cultivate future Asian American leaders in the legal community to address the single most important reality facing Asian American professionals today: the barrier to advancement.
This year, the Selection
Committee will select up to three scholars. Each scholar will be awarded $15,000 and will have access to prominent mentors, including Don H. Liu, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal and Risk Officer of Target Corporation. The DHL
Program will also provide assistance in OCI (on campus interview) bidding strategy, professional and soft-skills development and networking opportunities, including identifying potential internships. Details and more information about

To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must (i) be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of Asian descent;
(ii) be enrolled full-time as a 1L in a J.D. program at an ABA-accredited and approved law school in the U.S.; (iii) demonstrate exceptional academic accomplishments and leadership; (iv) demonstrate financial need; and (v) intend to

This fall, AABANY is launching a legal referral and information service (“LRIS”) as a public service primarily to help the general public, and especially the Asian American community. The goals of the LRIS are to provide information and
referrals, to recommend lawyers or other resources to provide competent, ethical legal advice and representation, to educate the public about legal representation and to increase respect for the legal profession.
We are seeking
qualified and experienced lawyers to serve on the panels of lawyers eligible to receive referrals from AABANY’s LRIS. Our current plan is to start the program on October 1st or as soon thereafter as possible.
This is a vital
program for AABANY that we anticipate will greatly benefit our panelists and fellow members as well as the public, and especially the Asian American community. If you would like to apply to be considered for the LRIS panel, please
contact main@aabany.org and we will send you an application form. If you have any questions, please send them to the same address.

| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and
coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times,
we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize
a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.
