Please Complete Your Proxy Ballot and Help AABANY Reach Quorum for the Annual Meeting

AABANY's Annual Meeting of Members will be held on February 9, 2021 at 7:00 pm ET on Remo.

All Active Members as of January 13 (the Record Date for the Election) should all have received an online proxy ballot. Please follow the instructions in that email and cast your vote by February 4, 2021. If you did not receive an email with voting instructions, please contact main@aabany.org.

At the Annual Meeting, there are two proposals scheduled to be voted on:
  • Proposal 1 – To elect the officers identified on the online ballot to serve a one-year term for the fiscal year beginning April 1, 2021 and ending March 31, 2022 (the “2022 Fiscal Year”); and
  • Proposal 2 – To elect 8 directors from the 8 nominees identified on the online ballot to serve two-year terms beginning on the first day of the 2022 Fiscal Year.

Every Active Member in good standing (as defined in AABANY’s by-laws) as of the Record Date of January 13, 2021 shall be entitled to vote at the Annual Meeting.

Your vote is very important. We need a quorum of 100 to conduct the Election at the Annual Meeting, and your proxy ballot will help us attain the necessary quorum. Whether or not you plan to attend the Annual Meeting, we encourage you to complete the online ballot by Feb. 4. If you would prefer to receive the proxy ballot in hard copy, please contact main@aabany.org.

If you plan to attend the Annual Meeting on Remo, register at https://www.aabany.org/events/event_details.asp?legacy=1&id=1469604

AABANY Hosts Weekly Membership Mixer Featuring the Academic Committee on January 22

On January 22, 2021, the Membership Committee hosted their weekly virtual Membership Mixer, with 20 participants in attendance. This week AABANY featured the Academic Committee represented by Co-Chairs Elaine Chiu, James Cho, Suzanne Kim, and Donna Lee. They shared with the group their career paths from being practitioners to professors, gave tips on how to become adjunct professors, and took questions about careers in academia.

This week, the ice breaker question to participants was: “What was your favorite law school class?” Participants responded that their favorite classes were property, criminal law, corporations, evidence, civil procedure, constitutional law, critical race theory, international human rights, law of international development, civil rights, and law and the movies.

The Membership Committee previously hosted Monthly Mixers at bars, ballparks, stadiums, operas, etc, but due to COVID, we have moved online to offer members a weekly outlet to share their feelings, see old friends, and make new connections. Mixers start at 6:30pm on Friday and the main event ends at 7:30pm but many often stay on after 7:30pm for smaller breakout groups.

Membership Committee will continue to host weekly virtual mixers until it is safe to gather together again in person.

We are giving away door prizes at some of the mixers. In order to win, you must be a member and must RSVP on the calendar entry on the AABANY website to get a raffle number. Non-members can join the mixer but won’t be eligible to win a prize.

Congratulations to Dianna Lam for winning this week’s prize: a full HD 1080p webcam with microphone and ring light! May your online courses at Fordham go smoothly, and your classmates and professors see and hear you in the best light!

Please join us on January 29, 2021 for our Meet the Board series, featuring Andy Yoo. Register by Thursday, Jan. 28, at https://www.aabany.org/events/event_details.asp?legacy=1&id=1468892.

AABANY Presents: How to Be a Star Associate, and Other Tips on Navigating Law Firms, During COVID-19, January 27

Join the Young Lawyers Committee for the first part in a series of conversations throughout the year about young lawyers navigating their careers in law firms and finding their place in the legal profession during COVID-19. If the path to success in law firms was formidable before, the unique challenges and issues presented to young attorneys in law firms during COVID-19 may have made it all the more uncertain. This panel will kick off the year by discussing the various challenges that young attorneys in law firms may be facing during the pandemic and feature a candid conversation with experienced practitioners on how to navigate those issues toward professional development and success in law firms.

The panel will address, among other topics, developing connections and adding value as an associate while working remotely; networking and building one’s professional brand while social distancing and/or quarantining; preparing for associate evaluations and tips for making positive impressions, both internally within the firm and externally on clients; and maintaining balance, perspective and momentum in the new norm of working from home.

Please register by clicking on the flyer.

Roger Gill, SVP of Lockton Companies will address current trends in legal malpractice and offer tips on what steps to take to avoid having your practice suffer an avalanche! The meeting is scheduled for 5pm on Wednesday, January 27, 2021. Please register by clicking on the flyer below.

Join AABANY’s Legal Referral and Information Service Panel

This fall, AABANY launched a legal referral and information service (“LRIS”) as a public service primarily to help the general public, and especially the Asian American community. The goals of the LRIS are to provide information and referrals, to recommend lawyers or other resources to provide competent, ethical legal advice and representation, to educate the public about legal representation and to increase respect for the legal profession.

We are seeking qualified and experienced lawyers to serve on the panels of lawyers eligible to receive referrals from AABANY’s LRIS.

This is a vital program for AABANY that we anticipate will greatly benefit our panelists and fellow members as well as the public, and especially the Asian American community. If you would like to apply to be considered for the LRIS panel, please contact joinlris@aabany.org and we will send you an application form. If you have any questions, please send them to the same address.

We hope you can join us in the launch of this important new AABANY initiative.

Join the AABANY Community Response Task Force

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.

The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.

PLEASE NOTE that the Community Response Task Force form has been updated.  Even if you have already filled out the form, we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
