AABANY values its members. We are offering a promotion for those of you whose membership has lapsed. We would hate to lose your membership and are writing with a special offer in hopes you will renew now.
AABANY members are part of a vibrant community of attorneys in the private and public sector, along with judges, academics, law students and legal professionals in New York. We are the largest minority bar association in New York and one of the most active, with numerous CLE programs throughout the year at which you can develop professionally and expand your professional networks. We connect socially at fun events, like sports and cultural outings, such as Mets and Yankees games this past summer and most recently a night at the opera at the Met.
As explained in the item above, members of AABANY are eligible for complimentary membership in the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA). To get the 20% discount code, contact us at membership@aabany.org and we will send you instructions. Once you have renewed, we will follow up with the special code you need to activate your free NAPABA Membership.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact membership@aabany.org. We hope to see you soon at a future AABANY event. |

Through the Pro Bono & Community Service Committee, AABANY conducts a monthly free legal advice and referral clinic. To ensure this program's success, please consider donating. To make it easier for our members and our community to donate to the Pro Bono Clinic, we have set up a page on Give Lively where you can make a donation by texting APAPROBONO to 44321. It takes seconds to donate, and we hope you will take a moment today to support the Pro Bono Clinic and help it meet its fundraising goals. Please donate today!
If you know family members, friends, or businesses, such as your firm, who would like to support the Clinic, please help us connect with them by contacting Karen Yau at karen.yau@aabany.org.
Or please urge them to make a donation directly. They can visit the website of Asian American Law Fund of New York (AALFNY), AABANY’s 501(c)(3) affiliate: https://www.asianamericanlawfund.org/donate/
AALFNY is accepting charitable donations on the Clinic’s behalf and can issue any donor a tax receipt. Any contribution, large or small, would help. Please be sure to indicate in the memo field that the donation is intended for the Pro Bono Clinic.

Through its Pro Bono & Community Service Committee, AABANY conducts a monthly free legal advice and referral clinic in the Community Room at 33 Bowery Street (Confucius Plaza) from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM. Those needing legal assistance should bring all documents pertaining to their legal issues to the clinic location, no earlier than 6:00 PM on the given day. Since the inauguration of this monthly pro bono clinic in 2015, hundreds of low-income community members have received thoughtful advice and appropriate legal referral from AABANY members.
Attorney volunteers do not need to be specialists or have expertise in a specific area of law. Attorney volunteers will only be rendering legal advice and will not take on any legal representation. All volunteers must be AABANY members for professional liability coverage purposes. Volunteers may sign up here to become an AABANY member or can do so at the Pro Bono Clinic.
Volunteers - attorneys and interpreters - should bring open ears, patience, and compassion. All volunteers should arrive by 6:15 PM and will be given an orientation before the start of the clinic. Attorneys and interpreters interested in volunteering for the Pro Bono Clinic should contact Asako.Aiba@aabany.org. |

Join us at the general interest meeting (and Lunar New Year celebration) for the AABANY Family Law Committee on 1/21/20! There'll be food and a raffle! Members and non-members welcome! The Family Law Committee will address issues related to the family and the practice of matrimonial law (divorce, custody, support, guardianship, prenups and more) and elder law (long-term care planning, public benefits, estate planning, and powers of attorney/healthcare proxies).
This committee will serve as a beacon for the Asian Pacific American community on family law issues, whether it's custody, equitable distribution, battling ACS or elder abuse. The committee will organize CLE's on topics such as the basics of divorce and social events to bring together the family law community. Some things we have in mind are wellness events, like yoga and meditation. We would also like to share our knowledge and expertise and volunteer our time in pro bono clinics (several of us actively volunteer at the AABANY monthly pro bono clinics) and at non-profits such as WomanKind and Charles B. Wang Community Health Center. Register here.

| AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the newly formed AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. In the past several months, we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies. Read more here.
