Hon. John Z. Wang, a proud member of AABANY, has launched his own
campaign to run for New York City Civil Court in the First Municipal
Court District, which covers Battery Park, Chinatown, FiDi, Greenwich
Village, Soho, Tribeca, and Two Bridges. An active contributor to the
Judiciary Committee of AABANY, Judge Wang has organized panels
on how to become an appointed and elected judge in hopes of encouraging
more Asian American and Pacific Islander lawyers to pursue this path.
Now, he hopes to make his community proud by becoming the first Asian
American Civil Court Judge elected to the First District.
Despite the restrictions against public gatherings during COVID-19, AABANY has remained active during APA Heritage Month by hosting multiple events, including a webinar on becoming a Magistrate Judge and a General Counsel virtual panel.
We will continue to celebrate APA Heritage Month during the remainder of May, and we hope you will join us at several events. To learn about upcoming events, click here.
AABANY's Director of Development and Co-Chair of the Real Estate Committee Margaret Ling has shared with us the excellent news that she was approved by the NYCLA Nominations Committee to join NYCLA's Board of Directors, where she will serve alongside NYCLA President-Elect Vince Chang, former AABANY President (2007-08). Margaret continues to serve as Co-Chair of the NYCLA Asian Practice Committee. The election and induction for the incoming NYCLA Board of Directors will take place at NYCLA's Annual Meeting on May 28 at 6 pm.
Please join us in congratulating Margaret Ling on this wonderful achievement!
Please join us on May 27th at
6:30 on a Zoom conference call to take a break, meet fellow IP
Committee members and kick off the summer with us. We will be talking
about the ideas we have for future events and would love to hear any
ideas or topics you would like to cover this year. Guests, new members
and students are all welcome to join. As an icebreaker, we will be doing some Rebus puzzles.
So come join us
and let’s talk about those patent, trademark and copyright related
conversations that are truly missing from your indoor life.
On May 28, 2020, please join us for a virtual trial reenactment and discussion
co-sponsored by the Asian Affinity Network at Allen & Overy LLP and
the Asian American Bar Association of New York, in commemoration of
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
In furtherance of our commitment to civic education and community
engagement, we will be hosting a live virtual trial reenactment of the
Murder of Vincent Chin and panel discussion on the political
implications of the outcome of the case and the history of Asian
immigration in the US, anti-Asian violence and hate crimes. This event
will be eligible for CLE credit. A virtual
networking reception (via Remo) for attendees to meet informally will
follow.
On May 22, 2020, the Membership Committee hosted their weekly Zoom Mixer Membership Mixer, with 21 participants in attendance. The icebreaker question posed to the participants was “What song would be playing if you had to make an grand entrance?” Members named “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Game of Thrones” theme song, “Eye of the Tiger,” “Final Countdown,” K-Pop classics, “‘Law and Order” theme, “Juicy,” “Young, Scrappy and Hungry,” and more great songs.
From Douglas C. Palmer, Clerk of Court, United State District Court, Eastern District of New York:
The application period for any one of four vacancies being filled at this time has been extended to May 29th, 2020. I have attached a link to the public announcement seeking applicants for currently vacant positions and upcoming vacancies. This is perhaps a unique time in the history of the federal court in this, the Eastern District of New York; I do not have any record of this number of opportunities being available at the same time since the US Magistrate Judge positions were created.
Asian Americans are one of the fastest growing groups in the United States. For Asian American communities to be properly represented in government decision making and to receive a proper allocation of funding, we must complete the
census.

AABANY members are part of a vibrant community of attorneys in the private and public sector, along with judges, academics, law students and legal professionals
in New York. We are the largest minority bar association in New York and one of the most active, with numerous CLE programs throughout the year at which you can develop professionally and expand your professional networks. We connect
socially at fun events, like sports and cultural outings, such as Mets and Yankees games this past summer and most recently a night at the opera at the Met.
As previously notified, members of AABANY are eligible for complimentary
membership in the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA).

AABANY’s Issues Committee is pleased to invite you to join the AABANY Community Response Task Force! The Community Response Task Force (CRTF) is AABANY’s answer to the rapidly changing legal landscape and the need for quick, effective, and
coordinated responses to the emergent issues that affect our communities. AABANY is firmly committed to being a strong voice and steadfast advocate on behalf of the Asian-American/Pacific-Islander community. During these challenging times,
we have all been witness to sweeping changes that necessitated powerful legal responses. While there have been some great triumphs, there were often times when it was difficult to obtain information, to find ways to contribute, or to organize
a response quickly enough to be effective.
The CRTF is specifically designed to address these needs. The CRTF will serve as a central clearinghouse for information and coordination – tailoring the alerts sent to each volunteer based on that volunteer’s preferences and the
needs of the community. Alerts and actions will range from emergency legal services to direct non-legal service actions and from workshops to rallies.
PLEASE NOTE that the Community Response Task Force form has been updated. Even if you have already filled out the form, we kindly ask that you resubmit your interest here.
The Judiciary Committee has created a clerkship directory to gather information about our members who may be willing to act as future resources and/or ultimately want to become a judge. If you've ever clerked for a judge, please take a
